Good Morning Folks, Five years ago, Brian Acton was looking for a job. His job at Yahoo, where he'd filled many engineering roles over 11 years, had come to an end. He was networking with recruiters. He met with Twitter. Twitter said no. He met with Facebook. Facebook said no. So he and Jan Koum, a colleague from Yahoo, set out to do their own thing. Last year they sold that thing to Facebook for 19 billion dollars. What'sApp was bought with Facebook stock at near its all-time high. So, from a financial point of view, Zuckerberg's "funny money" really has little relative meaning to begin with. However, the whole public mania with Social Media in general does illustrate what a misallocation of capital can be and the consequences of the FED's cheap money (low interest rates) have been. Imagine if instead, a group of investors had raised $ 19 Billion dollars in California during the current 3 year drought ( which actually began in 2000 ) for water resource projects? I mean really, what is more important, basic, and essential than water and food? In doing so, tens of thousands of jobs would be created. The market says no, social media and mobile instant messaging is much more important. This worries some much more than how much Facebook paid for this acquisition. Life is crazy. The moral of the story is never give up hope. Hope that you will find meaningful work and success in life. Hope that where money is available to capitalize new ideas and innovative talent, we direct some of that towards solving the world's most pressing problems. And hope that company's like Yahoo who had all the talent and innovative brain power to become Facebook rather than be trumped by them, will never stop being receptive to new ideas and change.

How can we demonstrate such an attitude, a spirit? Well you've probably seen an amazing talent on the Internet who has probably dazzled and amazed you with his sparkling entertainment.
Zach King is a filmmaker, born and raised in Portland. He started his film journey at age seven when his parents gave him a camera at a wedding. After being rejected from film school, he started the YouTube channel "FinalCutKing," where he posted video editing tutorials. Zach has garnered more than 400,000 subscribers to his channel. In September 2013, he launched a Vine account based around his "magic" editing and has grown an audience of nearly 1 million fans. What is most fascinating about his story is can you believe he was rejected from Film School but snuck in any way to observe classes while his Chinese dad insisted he be a piano major as is the native custom, he claims? He interned as a camera man on a Rhino shoot in thee wild which gave him great perspective as an editor. Even though some of his own movies have been viewed over twenty million times (a lot more than some $300 million Hollywood films) he still wants to be a Hollywood movie director and I'm sure we're going to be seeing him get an Oscar some day soon. Like Zach, some people who come to our Open Houses at FSO have faced insurmountable odds in life, tons of rejection and glass ceilings in their previous careers. But if they bring the skip, fire and twinkle and show ambition and work really hard, we are willing to invest in training and development and they can advance rapidly and their dreams can be realized. Good Morning Folks, To cap off an exciting week-long celebration looking back at some of our inspirational growth on MitchWeiner.com during the past 24 months, I have chosen to end with an inspirational message called "Everybody Leads." It's one I shared last summer on my LinkedIn Influencer series that's gotten widespread attention and accolades. No wonder, it was penned by one of FSO's star Manager, Alex V who runs the consistently number one Chicago performing operation at PwC, who also shared FSO's 2014 Stanley Cup Award with PwC Florham Park as FSO's top performing operations nationwide. Everybody Leads
"We live and work in difficult times. Today, change is everywhere, competition is fierce, and windows of opportunity slam shut before they’re even fully open.
In times like these, the burden of leadership feels heavier every day – but it doesn’t have to be that way. No burden is heavy if everyone lifts. Imagine if, regardless if it’s a small 2-3 person FSO team, a large FSO site, an FSO region or FSO as a whole where everyone not only lifts as one, but also leads, learns, grows, wins and celebrates as one.
In FSO, there is no such thing as an unimportant person, role, task or idea. When we roll out of bed each morning, we go to work knowing that, regardless of our title, we are not only needed, but appreciated.
“Everyone leads” means that every person, from the bottom to the top, is empowered to do what’s right for the customer, and encouraged to think and act like an owner. Here, leadership is action not position. Mitch’s mission is everyone’s mission, and any obstacle is considered everyone’s obstacles. “It’s not my job” is one phrase that is seldom heard. Everyone ensures that his or her team is charged up, in touch with the big picture, and willing and able to lead.
In FSO, no one is to blame, but everyone is accountable. No one points fingers, but everyone lends a hand. No one takes credit, but everyone freely gives it away.
If all this sounds like a smart way to run an organization, it is.
As Robert Townsend once wrote, “If people are coming to work excited… if they know they’re making a difference… if they’re making mistakes freely and fearlessly… if they’re having fun… if they’re concentrating on getting things done rather than just preparing reports – then somewhere (perhaps everywhere) you have leaders.”

In yesterday's post I cited another employee who put promise to practice acting on Alex's explanation of what true leadership is (“Everyone leads” means that every person, from the bottom to the top, is empowered to do what’s right for the customer, and encouraged to think and act like an owner.). That's exacty what our employee did that we discussed in yesterday's post, taking initiative to find new, better and less expensive ways of doing things for the customer to win.

Good Morning Folks, On some level, most of us want to be liked. Even if you work to maintain an appropriate distance from your team or employees, the more that people like you and want to emulate you, the more engaged they will be as team members. The best leaders are those who are genuinely liked. Here are 10 things that likable people consistently do. None of them will compromise your credibility or authority as a leader--so give them a try and see what happens. 1. Listen without interrupting. On some level, most of us want to be liked. Even if you work to maintain an appropriate distance from your team or employees, the more that people like you and want to emulate you, the more engaged they will be as team members. The best leaders are those who are genuinely liked. Here are 10 things that likable people consistently do. None of them will compromise your credibility or authority as a leader--so give them a try and see what happens. Become a great listener. That means no butting in, no rushing along, no asking questions until the speaker is done. Listen not to frame your own rebuttal but rather to genuinely understand. 2. Smile without smirking. Smiling and warmth make others around you feel good. It seems simplistic, but smiling is a lost skill of sorts. Master it and you'll stand out. 3. Speak without dictating. Speak and share your thoughts and ideas, but treat such conversations as a two-way street. Your voice and your wisdom have value, but set them forth in a way that respects the voice and wisdom of others in true dialogue. 4. Give without receiving. As the adage says, we make a living by what we get but we make a life by what we give. Don't keep score; give with a genuine heart, because it makes you happy. 5. Enjoy without complaining. Enjoy and be grateful for all that you have. It is gratitude that gives us the best reasons not to complain. 6. Trust without wavering. Trust, someone once said, is like an eraser--it gets smaller and smaller every time you have to use it. When we can offer others our sincere word and they know they can trust us, that's no small thing. Consistently doing what you've said you would do, and not doing what you've said you won't do, earns you a huge amount of trust. 7. Promise without forgetting. People with good intentions make promises; people with great character keep them. Keeping promises should be your highest priority--because when you give your word, there is no room to forget. Keep your promises. 8. Forgive without punishing. I believe there are two kinds of forgiveness: the kind that also gives the other person a chance, and the kind that forgives but still compels you to move on without that person. Either should be used wisely, and neither should be about punishment. The healthy way to forgive is whatever works best for you without punishing the other person. 9. Be honest without deceiving. The people we like the best are those who are honest, who follow their convictions and speak their truth. We like people who act on their beliefs. They may not always win, but you know what they stand for. 10. Be positive without reservation. Negative, angry people drag down everyone around them. Work on maintaining a positive attitude at work and in life. Make an effort to look for opportunities and solutions instead of barriers and problems. Whatever the situation, focus on what can be done. What about you? When was the last time you interacted with a truly likable person? (Or the last time you made someone instantly like you?) What was said? What was done?
Life is short so never regret anything that made you smile!
