Ted Tuesday: Margaret Heffernan- Dare to Disagree

"The truth won't set us free until we develop the skills and the moral courage to use it."

Good Morning Folks,

Good disagreement is central to progress.

Being honest and true to self is not always easy but it's more conducive to positive change.

Most people instinctively avoid conflict, but as Margaret Heffernan shows us, good disagreement is central to progress. She illustrates (sometimes counter intuitively) how the best partners aren’t echo chambers — and how great research teams, relationships and businesses allow people to deeply disagree.

The former CEO of five businesses, Margaret Heffernan explores the all-too-human thought patterns — like conflict avoidance and selective blindness — that lead managers and organizations astray.

Probably my favorite Ted talk ever. Speak truth. Because if you don't it will run over you.

Here's Margaret:

Thanks to you for listening.

Have a GREAT Day,

Shout-Out Wed: As Customers Tell it, The Strength of FSO Is Our People.

"Thank you for always accommodating us even when we are up against extreme deadlines and for doing all that you do with great efficiency and with a smile. No challenge is too great it seems and you do this for us every day. You are a big part of what makes our PHD Team, great."

Good Morning Folks,

Greetings from one of our newest accounts MedImmune in Gaithersburg, MD.  This is an amazing site and we have such an awesome team here – and as you'll see from the kudos that follow, bright, talented people who are already making a measurable and meaningful impact from our client's perspective.

The strength of FSO is our people. There is so much opportunity within FSO just waiting for YOU!

We have a Future Leadership program at FSO that evolves around Leadership, Community, Teamwork, Hospitality and Personal Development. And it often starts here, with kudos our employees receive directly from those clients they are assigned to. This is always a strong foundation to a promising career.

With that all being said, I could not be more excited to share what customers are saying about the great folks we have serving them, every day in every way.
Tyrone and Evely, Medimmune
"Recently I was introduced to Tyrone and Evelyn in the copy center.  It seems that their transition has been difficult and several projects of mine had to be started over from scratch.  They not only completed the projects but did so very quickly and effectively.  I am very satisfied with the quality of their work and wanted to pass that along to you."

Tyrone and Anthony, Medimmune
"I wanted to reach out to you to let you know what a great team you have there in Gaithersburg!!!   I was in a pinch for an audio room in building OMW and Tyrone and Tony did such an excellent job in assisting me and resolving the issue I had. They were so helpful and they made things so easy for me.  I wanted you to be aware of the wonderful support they provided and give them a huge shout out!!"

Medimmune Team
"I just wanted to inform you that your team in the copy room was very professional and prompt at getting the table tent info sheets completed for me yesterday. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the name of the lady that replaced Onya, but she did a great job at resizing the info sheets to fit the 5x7 tents. Thank you to you and your team for getting this done for me."

Evelyn, Medimmune
"I had a director who needed some binders made up without much notice and Evelyn went out of her way to help make this happen. Because of her assistance I was able to meet the needs of my managers in a timely manner."

Tareek, NY Times
"Just want you to know that Tarik is a great addition to your team. Not only is Tarik a pleasure to deal with but after he delivers to me and I sign, he will always ask "if I need anything else" which means a lot. He is a perfect gentlemen with excellent customer service skills"

Ray and CLEO , PHD **3 Kudos in 1 Month**
"I want to reiterate your thanks on behalf of PHD management. Ray, Cleo- our meeting was a huge success yesterday, due in no small part to your work both on the day and leading up to it, even on weekends. Thank you for always accommodating us even when we are up against extreme deadlines and for doing all that you do with great efficiency and with a smile. No challenge is too great it seems and you do this for us every day. You are a big part of what makes our PHD Team, great."

"Thank you so much for all your hard work and dedication helping us prepare for this latest pitch - we couldn’t have done it without you. You went above and beyond to accommodate our requests, and worked in a seamless and expedient manner. Thanks for being so easy to work with and making us look our best, we appreciate it so much!"

"Nice - and all of it is true - you know we all look at FSO people as true PHD players"

Sean, Aiche
"Thank you so much for all of your ongoing support today of the large conference today, including managing all of the visitors and deliveries, checking up on the ASCE rep we parked in Pine for a bit who was not feeling well (she appreciated it very much), providing supplemental beverages, generally checking in to make sure all is progressing well, and more."

Mailroom, Y&R
'I received the plants this morning from my mailroom. Your mailroom did amazing job packaging the plants.  I cannot thank you enough for all the help with these plants."

We are growing and we need each of YOU to help us achieve the high goals that Mitch and the ELT have set for the company – AND we are now planning for 2025 J.

We promise to give more and more to you in return! We want to THANK YOU and REWARD you for your continued loyalty and commitment. Promise – that is the Mitch way.

We are very blessed. We are very lucky. Our company is very strong and our future is even stronger.

Ted Tuesday— Andrew Stanton: The Clues To A Great Story

"Wonder is honest, it's completely innocent.
It can't be artificially evoked."

Good Morning Folks,

A good story can make a campfire that much eerier. A good story can flip a conversation at a party from completely awkward to wonderful. Good story telling skills separate the GREAT sales people from the mediocre.

A good story can glue your nose to a book. And, on screen, a good story can rivet generation after generation.

Whether it is something you want to sell, to make others see your point or just something you want to share. If it comes with a good story, something the listener can relate to, that is true to you as the teller of the story. That is a good story! One that the other will remember and even retell to friends or relatives.

So, uh, how do you tell one?

With millions of views racked up already on Ted and YouTube, Filmmaker Andrew Stanton ("Toy Story," "WALL-E") shares what he knows about storytelling — starting at the end and working back to the beginning.

Below, from the Ted Blog, see his golden rules of storytelling visualized by Karin Hueck and Rafael Quick of the Brazilian culture and science magazine Superinteressante. Each month, the magazine’s editors take a TED Talk and give it to their graphic wizards to interpret in any way they see fit. Here, a reimagining of Stanton’s talk on stories. Via the Ugly Duckling. Just click the image to see a larger version.

Andrew Stanton wrote the first film produced entirely on a computer, Toy Story. But what made that film a classic wasn't the history-making graphic technology -- it's the story, the heart, the characters that children around the world instantly accepted into their own lives.

Stanton wrote all three Toy Story movies at Pixar Animation Studios, where he was hired in 1990 as the second animator on staff. He has two Oscars, as the writer-director of Finding Nemo, WALL-E and his fantasy-adventure movie John Carter.

So tell a good story, it will make an impression that lasts.

Thanks to you for listening.

Have a GREAT Day,

Like The Oscars, FSO Is About Being The Best— Better Than All The Rest

"We are all on journeys. The visionaries. The underdogs. The artists. The long shots. The homegrown heroes who make every day a little better."

Good Morning Folks,

The water cooler talk this morning at offices all across America is about the Oscars last night. Surely the discussion centers on what folks were wearing or the memorable moments.

But today I want to talk to you about something broader, something with parallels to what we aspire to here everyday at FSO: Spirit.

Oscar spirit is contagious –– it can spread to everyone who has a dream, a goal, and the will to change. While most will never compete on an Oscar race, let alone win a Gold Oscar, Oscar spirit can elevate and inspire people to make real and lasting changes in their own lives. Today, an enormous opportunity exists to reinvigorate that Oscar spirit and — through FSO — help it stand for something even bigger for FSO, our clients, their customers enterprises, our employees and the entire world.

During the Oscars last night movies were celebrated that tackled topics like PTSD, Alzheimer's, the suicide admission and ALS. As someone once said, everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about— a loved one at war, a sibling with a challenging medical issue, relationship issues and more. All of us carry this baggage to work yet soldier on. So be kind.

The Oscars tell a great story of overcoming adversity. Whether defying a parent's dream to  pursue a career of passion, facing endless rejections and little recognition, but after years of hard work finally succeed and be recognized like J.K Simmons was last night. Or Julianne Moore nominated so many times yet told she could never win if Merrill Streep was her competition. Not so.

Also not so that America's once proud and celebrated Batman could just quietly fade into the sunset and accept a rumor that in Hollywood careers end at 40. Michael Keaton proved that wrong too last night. And as Common said in his eloquent speech after the heartfelt rendition of Glory (a highlight of the show for me)- we are all one humanity seeking common happiness and health.

Even the commercials reminded us that failure is often a requirement of success and being down and out is nothing but a state of mind. Here are two of my favorites.

Perfectly timed in tune with the Academy Awards, Cadillac rolls out a new set of commercials launching its “Dare Greatly” campaign. The first thing that may strike you about the commercials is the lack of, well, advertising going on; Cadillac intentionally left out physical vehicles from the piece. Instead, the Detroit-based luxury automaker plays up the idea of striving for greatness, piggybacking sentiments from a lecture Teddy Roosevelt delivered in 1910.

Next, for American Express, Mindy Kaling talks about her journey in her career as an actress in Hollywood and challenging the status quo. We are all on journeys. The visionaries. The underdogs. The artists. The long shots. The homegrown heroes who make every day a little better. Join us as we follow the stories that will inspire your journey.

For years, like the Oscars themselves, my brand has represented perfection. It has been synonymous with the best service and best people ever. To be part of a company where the employees LOVE what they do and the leaders CARE as much as they do, is such a blessing…we are VERY LUCKY to be a part of the FSO Family!

In delivering our Onsite Outsourcing Services, our people are the driving force in making the difference– it’s that twinkle in the eye, that skip in the step, that fire in the belly that makes our people different from any of our competitors .

We've built and grown his business with an emphasis on people – the hardworking, dedicated employees who care about doing a great job for our clients.

Know that I am personally invested and CARE about every person in our company. It is part of the personal touch that sets us a part in this industry and in business compared to most.

Believe in yourself, work hand and know that anything is possible and I will work as hard as you to ensure that all of your dreams come true.

You are all winners in my book. Shine on.

Have a GREAT Monday and a wonderful week!

Love Life!

Ted Tuesday: My simple invention, designed to keep my grandfather safe

What level of college do you need to be to be an inventor and win scholarships, awards and seed money? How about Kindergarten!

Good Morning Folks,

Every day our success at FSO comes from identifying problems customers are facing and bringing together a productive mix of People + Solutions + Technology to solve them. Today's guest works much the same way.

Kenneth Shinozuka designs smart products ... He's been doing so since he was in kindergarten.

When he was six years old, a family friend of Kenneth Shinozuka fell down in the bathroom. The friend was ok -- but the incident inspired him to design a motion detection system that could be embedded in bathroom tiles. He never actually made one in real life (remember, he was only six) ... but he was hooked on both the promise of invention and the potential of technology.

Since then, Shinozuka has designed smart devices for his grandfather, who has Alzheimer's disease. One invention that caught the eye of both the media and awards programs such as the Google Science Fair: a pair of smart socks, designed to send an alert to a caregiver if a patient gets out of bed. In 2014, he won the $50,000 Scientific American Science in Action Award, while he was also a 2014 Davidson Fellow.

Today's talk is about the device he created for his grandfather. Sixty percent of people with dementia wander off, an issue that can prove hugely stressful for both patients and caregivers. In this charming talk, hear how teen inventor Kenneth Shinozuka came up with a novel solution to help his night-wandering grandfather and the aunt who looks after him ... and how he hopes to help others with Alzheimer's. Have a look...

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more.

Boy, after watching that I'm embarrassed at what I thought was a productive day for me. How it should make you feel is that anything is possible here in the greatest country on Earth and my goal is to provide all of our employees an opportunity to realize their own true human potential right here at FSO.

Thanks to you for listening.

Ted Tuesday: How Do Dogs See With Their Noses - Alexandra Horowitz

Is this the reason why dogs sniff other dogs' butts?  (They have sent glands on their butts that tell them who individuals are and about their emotion/mood and health.)

Good Morning Folks,

Welcome to Ted Tuesdays where we inform and delight sharing my favorite inspirational talks from Ted. Ted is one of the best things that's been made possible by the Internet that was never possible before. It's opened up a world of knowledge delivered to your desktop that enhances life's experience.

I have dozens of Ted talks bookmarked to share with you. But this weekend I came across a just released one that I thought it was super interesting! If you've ever wondered why dogs have to sniff every single thing they come across then this will probably shed some light! I would gladly trade our "better" sense of sight for a canine-like sense of smell! It's crazy the amount of things you can pick up on and has made the world of dogs much more interesting to me!

You may have heard the expression that dogs ‘see with their noses.’ But these creature’s amazing nasal architecture actually reveals a whole world beyond what we can see. Alexandra Horowitz illustrates how the dog’s nose can smell the past, the future and even things that can’t be seen at all.

Their sense of smell is 100 million times more sensitive than humans'. They can read minds -- sensing emotions through smell. They can see the past, by sensing lingering odors of people and creatures that have moved on. And they can see the future, smelling oncoming people and creatures before they arrive.

Also, they can sense what direction a smell is coming from, and the direction it's going.

Lets us learn How do dogs see with their noses - Alexandra Horowitz (HD)
I haver been told that when dogs go the dog park the attraction is to "read the newspaper" sniffing out who else was there when and with how,

Well I just learned a thing or two about our own dogs. Who says an old dog like me can't learn some new tricks? j How about you?

Thanks for listening.

Have a GREAT Day,

CFO’s: It’s About The Right Resources Doing The Right Work For The Right Cost

"Nixon Peabody, PwC, NBC Universal, Brother International, Y&R, Kate Spade, AstraZeneca / MedImmune and hundreds more have partnered with FSO and will confirm significant and positive changes in employee attitude and results."

Greetings ,

Did you know that we work with dozens of CFOs in your city helping them to drive revenue growth?

They turn to us with these three of the most pressing concerns facing their company:

1. Healthcare costs
2. Controlling spending and improving profitability
3. Staff morale and motivation

One way more and more businesses are actively managing costs is by making use of flexible staffing strategies. By using Onsite Outsourcing, companies can convert a portion of one of their largest VARIABLE costs - labor - into a fixed expense that provides for stability and certainty in managing budgets.

Contracting Outsourced professionals can also help boost morale. FSO provides the most generous rewards, recognition, training and development programs in the industry that are tailored to our employees' needs and desires - with outsourcing they have a career which allows them to spread their wings beyond a single client.

Onsite Outsourcing also solves the CFO's largest problem by shifting the burden of healthcare to our shoulders. As a bonus, Outsourcing provides new resources, expertise and technology to make possible what as not possible before.

Before you cut costs unilaterally or advance any significant change initiative, we'd like to help you conduct a complimentary assessment to see what can be streamlined, cut or (re) Imagined to build your bottom line in a more efficient and profitable way.

Nixon Peabody, PwC, NBC Universal, Brother International, Y&R, Kate Spade, AstraZeneca / MedImmune and hundreds more have partnered with FSO and will confirm significant and positive changes in employee attitude and results.

I am happy to discuss various options as they pertain to your organization's unique needs or the needs of others you may know!

Call me personally 212-204-1193.

Have a GREAT Monday and a wonderful week!

Ted Tuesday: Brené Brown: The Power of Vulnerability

“You’re imperfect, and you’re wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging.” Brené Brown studies vulnerability, courage, authenticity, and shame.

Good Morning Folks.

Brené Brown, Ph.D., LMSW is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. She has spent the past decade studying vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame.

Her 2010 TEDx Houston talk on the power of vulnerability is one of the most watched talks on TED.com, with over 18 million views. She gave the closing talk, Listening to Shame,  at the 2012 TED Conference in Long Beach.

Brené is the author of the #1 New York Times Bestseller Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead (2012). She is also the author of the #1 New York Times Bestseller The Gifts of Imperfection (2010), and I Thought It Was Just Me (2007).

Bren̩ is also the founder and CEO of The Daring Way Рa teaching and certification program for helping professionals who want to facilitate her work on vulnerability, courage, shame, and worthiness.

Brené Brown studies human connection — our ability to empathize, belong, love. In a poignant, funny talk, she shares a deep insight from her research, one that sent her on a personal quest to know herself as well as to understand humanity. A talk to share.

Here’s the thing: Brown: A few years ago she had a nervous breakdown and started to see a therapist. 'The therapist said to me, “You have to embrace your vulnerability,” and I was like, “Screw that.”’

In her new book she writes, 'We are hardwired to connect with others, it’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives… Before I knew it, I had been hijacked by my research participants who, when asked to talk about their most important relationships and experiences of connection, kept telling me about heartbreak, betrayal and shame – the fear of not being worthy of real connection.’

As part of her work she tried first to understand why a handful of people believe in their own worthiness; she calls these people 'Wholehearted’. She loses me a bit here. Is Wholehearted another word for happy, I ask her? 'No,’ she says adamantly. 'In fact I think our capacity for Wholeheartedness can never be greater than our willingness to be broken-hearted. It means engaging with the world from a place of vulnerability and worthiness. It’s about being all in, saying, “I’m here and I’m going to love you fully and if you cheat on me you’re going to devastate me and break my heart, but I’m not holding back because this is short.”’

Tears spring to her eyes as she says this. In fact, it was her realization that she herself fell far short of Wholehearted that tipped her over the edge.

Have a look at Brené Brown: The power of vulnerability:

Brené Brown is an absolute legend. This is groundbreaking - not in terms of peoples awareness of these subjects and what they mean... But in these messages enhanced communication made accessible to a wider audience on this level. Really awesome stuff.

Thanks to The Telegraph for inspiring me to watch this talk, and to you for listening.

Have a GREAT Day,

The "Serving" Leaders

"Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.

Good Morning Folks,

Today I share an internal communique that went out earlier this week in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It's from Capco Business Operations Manager, Jenna Solis, whom you often read about receiving KUDOS in our Shout Out Wednesday posts. Here's Jenna:
A serving leader by definition is one who puts the needs of others first; and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible.
FSO family, whether you are the newest person within the company or the oldest, your skills and energy are needed to push our company's vision.
Management we must converse with our team members on their personal career goals to ensure the highest performance levels. Mitch and the leadership teams are vigorously implementing new forums to educate, develop and enhance our teams.
As Mitch has stated "Our ability to succeed is up to us". I encourage you all to plug into the FSO system participate in every meeting and conversation that will allow you to goal set, strategize and execute effectively. Lastly, we must continue to support one another.
True leadership is selfless; in the days after the big win for Capco we began to strategize and game plan for the current year. I asked everyone what they believed were the key things that contributed to the win.
The top 5 responses were as follows:
1. Understanding we are FSO Brand Ambassadors.
2. Putting the needs of others first
3. Supporting each other in all things
4. Identifying our strengths and growing in our individual roles
5. Kudos!
Speaking of Dr. King, if you haven't seem Selma yet, you MUST!

We are all winners FSO! Lets Rock!

Shout Out Wednesday: Recognizing Our AMAZING Employees

"The previous team was good, but this new group is really bringing their ‘A’ game, going out of their way to be pleasant, accommodating and not to mention very polished."

Good Morning Folks,

As you know, the entire ELT and I love nothing more than recognizing and rewarding our AMAZING employees. But the best recognition, as we share with you this morning, is from customers. Here's how our brightest stars are helping customers to accomplish more than they ever thought possible.

Let's start with a just-in "On The Spot" recognition. Our client at Amnesty international sent out a great kudos email which resulted in a huge "Thank You For A Job Well Done"  "On The Spot Award" for our man Jose Campos.

You make us very proud at FSO, Jose.

Thank you so much for all you do for our client at Amnesty International

Jose Campos, Amnesty International
"Jose has been a tremendous asset to me during the past several weeks. With Rafael's departure, Jose has been an incredible support system to myself, Carol and the Finance Department. He took it upon himself to look through invoices that Rafael left behind, properly organized them, and then delegated with the Finance department to get those invoices paid. He also called vendors, and took the initiative of auditing invoices.
Additionally, you have spent a lot of time mentoring Jose, and it shows, and because of your guidance Jose is who he is today! I am so impressed and lucky to have someone like Jose on my side!  Thank you!"

Monica Veloz, Capco
"Monica:I wanted to personally thank you for the tremendous assistance you and your team provided me in October and November. I had a number of guests and last minute scheduling conflicts and you made all the logistics happen seamlessly. You coordinated my meeting rooms, made sure my guests were catered to and made it all feel so easy. On top of that you helped me with last minute documentation I needed and the product was perfect. Thank you again; it is a pleasure knowing someone has your back."

Esther, Hassell, Capco

"Esther went above and beyond to make me feel welcome in my first week here. Without her, I might still be lost the office and late to all my meetings.
Appreciate all the help, Esther!"

Aida Hibbert, FSO - National Operations Account Development Director
THANK YOU!!! You gave me the opportunity to come out to Kate Spade and try something totally out of my element! You pushed to make sure me and Ernest were well versed on procedures with mail and started the foundation for our relationship with our wonderful client contact, Jorge. I know you're not our director anymore, but we share these bragging rights with you!!!  You Rock!"

Concierge Fosun Team
"Barbara, I am part of the Executive Search Team for J.P. Morgan and work at 1 CMP on the 27th floor. I have noticed a distinct change in the lobby – specifically the wonderful people who appeared after the holidays – from the front doors to the staff at the front desk. The previous team was good, but this new group is really bringing their ‘A’ game, going out of their way to be pleasant, accommodating and not to mention very polished."

These people are doing a great job!

Ben Rydell, Y&R
"I just wanted to say how fantastic he is, and what an asset. He never fails to bend over backwards."

Office Services HQ Team
"I would like to thank each of you for continuously support today. You all did an amazing Job and I am very appreciative of your great efforts to ensure the management meeting ran smoothly. Once again, you've done a great job! Cheers to you!"

Doel Dantiago and Pablo Gonzalez
"I would like to give a kudos to Doel Dantiago and Pablo Gonzalez for an excellent job well done during the management meeting. They both did a great job with a smile and even stayed a little later with Padre to ensure the office was back up to par... I would definitely like to have them for the next event, as that is help at its finest J"

Tysheerah Wallace, McCarter English
"Ty Wallace joined in the EB office, handling reception and administrative responsibilities, last week. She is proving herself to be a motivated, self-starter, who is incredibly responsive. She also has excellent communication skills, interacting with our lawyers, staff and clients in a very professional and friendly manner. Great hire. I have encouraged Ty to keep up the great work and, based on performance to date, expect that she will more than rise to the occasion."

I simply could not be more proud of my staff and their commitment to the “FSO way” – a productive and profitable combination of People + Solutions + Technology to keep clients ahead of the curve in a rapidly evolving world. We’ve certainly accomplished great things and I can say with confidence that we have only scratched the surface.

I personally plan to leave a legacy in this business to honor the wonderful people, hourly employees and middle management, who serve our clients each and every day. It's my passion, my drive and my promise to the people who work for me.

At FSO we take dreams and we make those dreams into tangible results. The foundation of our winning strategy is the PERSONAL, PASSIONATE & PRODUCTIVE approach we take to our employees and to our clients.

To all of our honorees, CHEERS to you and THANK YOU for working tirelessly to deliver Service Extraordinaire with a smile. Keep up the great work!!

Have a great day and thanks for being a part of our amazing journey.
