Good Morning Folks,

I spotted this at ALA last week. Since a very key component of our strategy and success is our Future Leaders Program (FLP), I'm shaing with you in the spirit of sending you off to the weekend on a high note.

==> How real leaders act:
1. They develop a positive mental attitude and let it be seen and felt by others.
2. They always speak in a carefully disciplined, friendly tone.
3. They pay close attention to someone speaking to them.
4. They are able to maintain their composure in all circumstances.
5. They are patient.
6. They keep an open mind.
7. They smile when speaking with others.
8. They know that not all their thoughts need to be expressed.
9. They don't procrastinate.
10. They engage in at least one good deed a day.
11. They find a lesson in failure rather than brood over it.
12. They act as if the person they are speaking to is the most important person in the world.
13. They praise others in a genuine way without being excessive.
14. They have someone they trust point out their flaws

How many days have we gone home wondering what we accomplished in the day because we moved so quickly from one thing to the next?

Stopping to appreciate our accomplishments, finding what we have learned through the experience and how we can apply those things moving forward helps us to think more critically, thoughtfully and strategically moving forward. It also helps to energize you to keep pushing forward and to realize the value we provide.

So, today I celebrate my accomplishments and how my past experiences both good and bad got me to this point. I have learned from my mistakes and treasure each day with a new appreciation!

What a great reminder for a Friday, when we typically start to fret about we didn't get done this week. Instead, I'm going to do the happy dance around all the breakthroughs my clients got and all the new things I learned! A MUCH better way to wrap up the week.

We can spend so much time managing our careers, our money and our relationships that we don't always stop to recognize our successes. We're too busy moving on to the next meeting, project or item on our to-do list. Or we set the bar so high we won't hit it for a while, if at all.

So today, let's celebrate.

Let's forget about outcomes. It's not about whether you got the promotion, the salary bump you asked for or the new client. Right now, it's the fact that you asked, you researched, you presented.

For just a few seconds, focus less on what's important to your boss, your company and your colleagues and zero in on what was progress for you. 

Did you wake up early enough so that your morning wasn't rushed? Awesome. 

Did you bring your lunch this week and save the money to go toward a new car? Nice work. 

Did you rely less on your notes during a presentation? Way to go.

I bet, with a little practice, you'll even be able to find things to celebrate in less than ideal circumstances. 

Like Rebecca, who started a discussion in Connect: Professional Women's Network, noting that she was laid off after 20 years in marketing and wanted to reinvent herself. Nearly 2,000 people commented with tips and support for handling the transition. Being laid off is rough, but I'm celebrating Rebecca being vulnerable enough to ask for advice and all the who people responded with encouragement and job leads.

Now it's your turn. What can you celebrate right now?

Inspire ME Friday: Chipotle Adds Inspiration To Their Menu

My assistant, Hope, came across this story as she was eating Chipotle for lunch. It was on the paper bag they put your food in. She found it inspirational and think you will too. 

TWO-MINUTE ALCHEMY

A legend tells of a man who used to carry water every day to his village, using two large pitchers tied on either end of a piece of wood, which he placed across his shoulders. 

One of the pitchers was older than the other and was full of small cracks; every time the man came back along the path to his house, half of the water was lost. 

For two years, the man made the same journey. The younger pitcher was always very proud of the way it did its work and was sure that it was up to the task for which it had been created, while the other pitcher was mortally ashamed that it could carry out only half its task, even though it knew that the cracks were the result of long years of work. 

So ashamed was the old pitcher that, one day, while the man was preparing to fill it up with water from the well, it decided to speak to him. 

“I wish to apologize because, due to my age, you only manage to take home half the water you fill me with, and thus quench only half the thirst awaiting you in your house.” 

The man smiled and said:  “When we go back, be sure to take a careful look at the path.” 

The pitcher did as the man asked and noticed many flowers and plants growing along one side of the path. 

“Do you see how much more beautiful nature is on your side of the road?” the man remarked. “I knew you had cracks, but I decided to take advantage of them. I sowed vegetables and flowers there, and you always watered them. I’ve picked dozens of roses to decorate my house, and my children have had lettuce, cabbage and onions to eat. If you were not the way you are, I could never have done this. We all, at some point, grow old and acquire other qualities, and these can always be turned to good advantage.”

We are a great team. We are a great company. We have great people. You have to come every day with your game day ready to go. Let's see how many football teams remember that this weekend.

Inspire ME Friday: Everyone Is Happy Today

Good Morning Folks,

One thing I can always count on: Everyone is happy and nice today. Why? It's a holiday weekend, and many are already glancing at there clock in anticipation.

But why does it take an external event to make one happy?

And why do people have to wonder why I am happy all the time? They argue, Mitch you can't always be happy!" Here's my secret:

Remember, every human being on the planet wants to be happy. Anything that anyone desires is because they think their desire will make them happy. Whether it is health, money, a loving relationship, material things, accomplishments, a job, or anything at all, the desire for happiness is the bottom line of all of them. But remember that happiness is a state inside of us, and something on the outside can only bring fleeting happiness, because material things are impermanent.

Permanent happiness comes from you choosing to be permanently happy. When you choose happiness, then you attract all the happy things as well. The happy things are the icing on the cake, but the cake is happiness.

Today I shared a great article about happiness which makes a solid analogy to the Burning Man Festival underway in the desert, that now attracts 80,000 people who wait hours in slow moving one-lane road traffic to hunker down in a dust bowl in search of happiness.

In "Hacking Happiness: The New Radical Self-Reliance," author Dina Kaplan opines, "If you live by values, and respect yourself for doing so, you’ll begin projecting something people around you will notice. It’s the energy of not seeking external praise or validation, not glowing from a hundred likes on your latest Facebook post. It is, instead, looking only for validation from within. Are you living with integrity, according to your values, even if you’ve never shared them with anyone else? If you live or die by your values, letting them be a key gauge of success, the world starts unfolding in a beautiful way. You derive happiness from yourself. You’re more even throughout the day."

Dina nails it. And I highly recommend you start your weekend checking out the full article. A permanent happiness mindset beats a three day excuse for being happy any day.

And speaking of the holiday, most people think it's about barbecues and parades and sales. Actually Labor Day in the United States is a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. It's your day, our day, to take a moment out from work to realize how lucky we are.

Skilled candidates for any open position must be able to communicate things in a timely, understandable manner. In other words, you want a candidate that can walk the walk when it comes to talking the talk!

==> Tough Skin
No job is smooth sailing, everyone has had to weather a storm. When the going gets tough, would your candidates get going or brace themselves for the worst?

==> Resourcefulness 
No job is perfect and it will come with limited resources. Resourceful candidates can make do with what they have and ask for help when necessary since they know that their success is the company’s success.

==> A Moral Compass
Top candidates will always make sure to do the right thing and have a strong sense of ethics. 

==> Willingness to Learn 
Times change, and candidates must be willing and able to learn and adapt and  in order to keep up with the changing times.

Inspire ME Friday: Leave Your Excuses At The Door

“I don’t listen too much to people who tell me I can’t do something,” the 30-year-old born without arms said. “There’s not a whole lot that’s going to stand in my way.”

Good Morning Folks,

While he was born with no arms, Richie Parker, a chassis and body component designer for Hendrick Motorsports, doesn’t let excuses hinder him from achieving excellence.

“Every step of the way in life there have been people who said I can’t do things — said I couldn’t ride a bicycle, there have been people who said I couldn’t live on my own, couldn’t get a good job and support myself, or I couldn’t go to college and graduate,” Parker said in an interview with ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi. “I don’t listen to people too much when they tell me I can’t do something. There’s not a whole lot that’s going to stand in my way.”

Parker's birth defect is called bilateral amelia. His parents wanted him to live as normal a childhood as possible, and his independence and ingenuity allowed him to do so, according to ESPN.com.

“There were always things around the house that made it so I didn’t have to ask someone else for help to do it, and that was always important to me,” Parker said. “I had two parents who from day one tried to make it so that my life was ... as normal as possible, whatever normal is.”

Despite limitations some people expected Parker would face, he pursued his passion for cars and landed a job at Hendrick Motorsports, which “has earned a record 10 car owner championships in NASCAR’s premier division, the Sprint Cup Series,” according to hendrickmotorsports.com.

“I think I had about 20 resumes I went through before I settled on Richie’s. I knew he could do the things I needed him to do, it was more a question of how,” said Rex Stump, Hendrick engineering manager, in the ESPN clip. “We sat down and he showed me how he works on the computer and how he does his design work. I write with my right hand, your write with your left hand, he happens to write with his feet.”

Parker’s internship with Hendricks was initially set at 10 months. But as Rinaldi said in the clip, “Eight years and five championships later, he’s still here.”

The positive outlook and gumption Parker has inspires others.

“In truth, Richie’s entire life has been one remarkable study in engineering,” ESPN’s narrator said. “Nearly every task requires ingenuity.”

“I don’t know that there’s a whole lot in life period that I can say that I can’t do — just things that I haven’t done yet,” Parker said.

Today's inspirational story I discovered on Facebook and is perhaps one of the most touching stories I've ever heard with regard to service. There's holding a door for someone, opening your umbrella and escorting them to a cab... as I've blogged about our teammates doing...  but this goes even a step further.

What a beautiful, beautiful, very touching story. What a magical thing he did for the nice lady, it brought tears to my eyes, as it will yours.

A NYC Taxi driver wrote:

"I arrived at the address and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes I honked again. Since this was going to be my last ride of my shift I thought about just driving away, but instead I put the car in park and walked up to the door and knocked.. 'Just a minute', answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. 

After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90's stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940's movie. 

By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. 

There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard. 

box filled with photos and glassware. 

'Would you carry my bag out to the car?' she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. 

She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb. 

She kept thanking me for my kindness. 'It's nothing', I told her.. 'I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.' 

'Oh, you're such a good boy, she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, 'Could you drive through downtown?' 

'It's not the shortest way,' I answered quickly.. 

'Oh, I don't mind,' she said. 'I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice. 

I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. 'I don't have any family left,' she continued in a soft voice.'The doctor says I don't have very long.' I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. 

'What route would you like me to take?' I asked. 

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. 

We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. 

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing. 

As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, 'I'm tired.Let's go now'. 

We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico. 

Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. 

They must have been expecting her. 

I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair. 

'How much do I owe you?' She asked, reaching into her purse. 

'Nothing,' I said. 

'You have to make a living,' she answered. 

'There are other passengers,' I responded. 

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug.She held onto me tightly. 

'You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,' she said. 'Thank you.' 

I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light.. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life..

I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away? 

On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life. 

We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. 

But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one."

So touching it brought tears to my eyes...... Something worth reading and passing along because we never know the path we walk.........and when it will end. I can't even imagine what that trip down memory lane would be without family.

"I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated." he said. Beautiful. Folks, love each other and help each other. That's what life is about.
