"It may be strange to hear this coming from me, but you just can’t motivate another person. You can inspire, encourage and support…but all meaningful motivation is internal."
Good Morning Folks,
To keep your employees motivated you have to create a purpose for their work, make them feel proud to work in your company, keep them constantly engaged and give the opportunity to learn more and ground for then to proof themselves. It is always nice to get a bonus but it is also often even more rewarding to be recognized for your achievements among your peers at work and your bosses. That’s an irreplaceable feeling!
A few months ago during an interview I had this exchange:
Q: OK- So how do you know what’s going to motivate each person? Are you saying I’ve got to ask every single person who is working for me what motivates them?
A: That is exactly what I’m saying! You know what’s funny? An executive might spend thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours on assessments and studies and feel pretty good about it, but that same executive might feel funny about simple sitting down with an individual employee and just ask them what they want!
I’ve coached executives who have never asked even their closest subordinates why they want to do their jobs- or even if they want to. They might know in a global sense, from an assessment, what “type” category each employee falls into and what motivates that particular type of employee- but that doesn’t cover the unique needs, desires and ambitions of every individual working for you.
Of course this process must be delegated to those supervisors closest to each employee. Not only is that the manageable set, but the immediate supervisor is most vested in the performance of that individual.
In the world of motivation and engagement, it’s important to remember that ALL business is an interaction between people.
Everything rises and falls on leadership. Always keep employees informed of what’s happening . Allow them to leave their comfort zone is also good but the prerequisite of that is not to only build ownership but build relationships with your employees.
Take care of the people who take care of your business!
And have a GREAT day!
Love Life!
