As you know I am a firm believer in continuing education by asking my team to read business books. Tom Peters is one of my favorites.

But now, thanks to the Internet, there are much shorter reads with just as powerful takeaways.

Some thoughts on the culture article: Give me a team I can bring together in person now and then and watch the synergy pay off. 

As an people / talent professional, I have been astounded by how often senior leaders don’t “get” that culture is a living thing, unique to a company or organization. I once heard a fairly new leader describe the corporate culture of our organization to candidates but what he described was the culture of his previous company. He truly thought that if he said it, it would be so. As hard as I tried, I could not convince him that one organization’s culture could not simply be grafted onto a new organization and its employees.

The article linked above proffers that "... many companies have tried to adopt, say, the Zappos culture or the Google culture… but in most cases those attempts fail because culture is something that can be mimicked but almost never successfully copied."  

Within every organization, decision making drives performance. Every employee comes to work every day and makes decisions that impact performance.   The workplace has many temptations that employees must resist, from the petty impulse to claim credit for someone else's work, to the unscrupulous lapse of lying in a negotiation, to the criminal act of misrepresenting financial numbers.   

These decisions, at every level of the organization, define the corporate culture and drive performance.   

In 2008, Harvard Business School Professor Robert S. Kaplan and his Palladium Group colleague David P. Norton wrote The Execution Premium: Linking Strategy to Operations for Competitive Advantage.   There are ten (10) steps to define the corporate culture and drive performance, including:  
Step 1: Visualize the strategy.   
Step 2: Communicate the strategy. 
Step 3: Identify strategic projects.   
Step 4: Align projects with strategy.   
Step 5: Align individual roles and provide incentives.  
Step 6: Manage projects.   
Step 7: Make decisions aligned with strategy.   
Step 8: Measure the strategy.   
Step 9: Report progress.  
Step 10: Reward performance.  
To make change, leaders must identify behaviors that are in line with the desired culture and find ways to reward or reinforce them

I will like to say these idea is common among young growing companies regardless of years in existence, they are still learning, but when they get to certain points in their growth, they begin to value employees much as the value the customer, quite really, they realize that the employees also make the hearth of the company much as the customer do, it's a matter of time, if the company as a future or big dreams.

Inspire ME Friday: Do You Have What It Takes?

Many of our associates come from positions of service where they eat, sleep, and breathe hospitality for years before joining FSO. They exude a positive attitude, energy, and cater-to-the-customer commitment.

One example of our training and development initiatives is FISH. FISH philosophy was inspired by the Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle, WA, world famous for its incredible energy and commitment to customer service. 

They designed 4 basic principles that help bring new energy and commitment to the work place:  Play, Be There, Choose Your Attitude, and Make Their Day. We have tied this into our FSO culture of hospitality, service and being the Happiest Place to Work.  It’s about providing great service, building a culture where employees are committed to their company and job, resulting in effective leaders and improved teamwork. 

I recently shared an article on social media, "The 6 Traits All Top Candidates Have," outlining a wish list tailor made for hiring hospitality teammates. Several of the traits include:

==> Drive 

This is a broad characteristic that could actually encompass other favorable traits. However, drive will boil down to one thing: is the candidate hungry for success?

==> Excellent Communication

Skilled candidates for any open position must be able to communicate things in a timely, understandable manner. In other words, you want a candidate that can walk the walk when it comes to talking the talk!

==> Tough Skin

No job is smooth sailing, everyone has had to weather a storm. When the going gets tough, would your candidates get going or brace themselves for the worst?

==> Resourcefulness 

No job is perfect and it will come with limited resources. Resourceful candidates can make do with what they have and ask for help when necessary since they know that their success is the company’s success.

==> A Moral Compass

Top candidates will always make sure to do the right thing and have a strong sense of ethics. 

==> Willingness to Learn 

Times change, and candidates must be willing and able to learn and adapt and  in order to keep up with the changing times.

Inspire ME Friday: Leave Your Excuses At The Door

“I don’t listen too much to people who tell me I can’t do something,” the 30-year-old born without arms said. “There’s not a whole lot that’s going to stand in my way.”







Good Morning Folks,

While he was born with no arms, Richie Parker, a chassis and body component designer for Hendrick Motorsports, doesn’t let excuses hinder him from achieving excellence.

“Every step of the way in life there have been people who said I can’t do things — said I couldn’t ride a bicycle, there have been people who said I couldn’t live on my own, couldn’t get a good job and support myself, or I couldn’t go to college and graduate,” Parker said in an interview with ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi. “I don’t listen to people too much when they tell me I can’t do something. There’s not a whole lot that’s going to stand in my way.”

Parker's birth defect is called bilateral amelia. His parents wanted him to live as normal a childhood as possible, and his independence and ingenuity allowed him to do so, according to ESPN.com.

“There were always things around the house that made it so I didn’t have to ask someone else for help to do it, and that was always important to me,” Parker said. “I had two parents who from day one tried to make it so that my life was ... as normal as possible, whatever normal is.”

Despite limitations some people expected Parker would face, he pursued his passion for cars and landed a job at Hendrick Motorsports, which “has earned a record 10 car owner championships in NASCAR’s premier division, the Sprint Cup Series,” according to hendrickmotorsports.com.

“I think I had about 20 resumes I went through before I settled on Richie’s. I knew he could do the things I needed him to do, it was more a question of how,” said Rex Stump, Hendrick engineering manager, in the ESPN clip. “We sat down and he showed me how he works on the computer and how he does his design work. I write with my right hand, your write with your left hand, he happens to write with his feet.”

Parker’s internship with Hendricks was initially set at 10 months. But as Rinaldi said in the clip, “Eight years and five championships later, he’s still here.”

The positive outlook and gumption Parker has inspires others.

“In truth, Richie’s entire life has been one remarkable study in engineering,” ESPN’s narrator said. “Nearly every task requires ingenuity.”

“I don’t know that there’s a whole lot in life period that I can say that I can’t do — just things that I haven’t done yet,” Parker said.
