Like The Oscars, FSO Is About Being The Best— Better Than All The Rest

Good Morning Folks,

The water cooler talk this morning at offices all across America is about the Oscars last night. Surely the discussion centers on what folks were wearing or the memorable moments. 

But today I want to talk to you about something broader, something with parallels to what we aspire to here everyday at FSO: Spirit.

Oscar spirit is contagious –– it can spread to everyone who has a dream, a goal, and the will to change. While most will never compete on an Oscar race, let alone win a Gold Oscar, Oscar spirit can elevate and inspire people to make real and lasting changes in their own lives. Today, an enormous opportunity exists to reinvigorate that Oscar spirit and — through FSO — help it stand for something even bigger for FSO, our clients, their customers enterprises, our employees and the entire world.

During the Oscars last night movies were celebrated that tackled topics like PTSD, Alzheimer's, the suicide admission and ALS. As someone once said, everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about— a loved one at war, a sibling with a challenging medical issue, relationship issues and more. All of us carry this baggage to work yet soldier on. So be kind.

The Oscars tell a great story of overcoming adversity. Whether defying a parent's dream to  pursue a career of passion, facing endless rejections and little recognition, but after years of hard work finally succeed and be recognized like J.K Simmons was last night. Or Julianne Moore nominated so many times yet told she could never win if Merrill Streep was her competition. Not so. 

Also not so that America's once proud and celebrated Batman could just quietly fade into the sunset and accept a rumor that in Hollywood careers end at 40. Michael Keaton proved that wrong too last night. And as Common said in his eloquent speech after the heartfelt rendition of Glory (a highlight of the show for me)- we are all one humanity seeking common happiness and health.

Even the commercials reminded us that failure is often a requirement of success and being down and out is nothing but a state of mind. Here are two of my favorites.

Perfectly timed in tune with the Academy Awards, Cadillac rolls out a new set of commercials launching its “Dare Greatly” campaign. The first thing that may strike you about the commercials is the lack of, well, advertising going on; Cadillac intentionally left out physical vehicles from the piece. Instead, the Detroit-based luxury automaker plays up the idea of striving for greatness, piggybacking sentiments from a lecture Teddy Roosevelt delivered in 1910.

Next, for American Express, Mindy Kaling talks about her journey in her career as an actress in Hollywood and challenging the status quo. We are all on journeys. The visionaries. The underdogs. The artists. The long shots. The homegrown heroes who make every day a little better. Join us as we follow the stories that will inspire your journey.



For years, like the Oscars themselves, my brand has represented perfection. It has been synonymous with the best service and best people ever. Today I share an internal communique that went out earlier this week in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It's from Capco Business Operations Manager, Jenna Solis, whom you often read about receiving KUDOS in our Shout Out Wednesday posts. Here's Jenna:
A serving leader by definition is one who puts the needs of others first; and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible.
FSO family, whether you are the newest person within the company or the oldest, your skills and energy are needed to push our company's vision. 
Management we must converse with our team members on their personal career goals to ensure the highest performance levels. Mitch and the leadership teams are vigorously implementing new forums to educate, develop and enhance our teams.  
As Mitch has stated "Our ability to succeed is up to us". I encourage you all to plug into the FSO system participate in every meeting and conversation that will allow you to goal set, strategize and execute effectively. Lastly, we must continue to support one another.
True leadership is selfless; in the days after the big win for Capco we began to strategize and game plan for the current year. I asked everyone what they believed were the key things that contributed to the win.

Shout Out Wednesday: Recognizing Our AMAZING Employees

As you know, the entire ELT and I love nothing more than recognizing and rewarding our AMAZING employees. But the best recognition, as we share with you this morning, is from customers. Here's how our brightest stars are helping customers to accomplish more than they ever thought possible.

Let's start with a just-in "On The Spot" recognition. Our client at Amnesty international sent out a great kudos email which resulted in a huge "Thank You For A Job Well Done"  "On The Spot Award" for our man Jose Campos.

He also called vendors, and took the initiative of auditing invoices.

One of the attorneys requested numerous jobs to be printed in the NYC office, both by Office Services and the NP library in NYC. At my request, these jobs were scattered among the visiting attorney office and Reception. The attorney then requested to have all of the documents he had printed Fed Ex’d to his home for Saturday delivery. Allen took care of printing the documents, amassing them, and Fed Exing them to the attorney. He followed up by sending me the Fed Ex tracking information. He not only took care of my various requests expeditiously, he did so with a smile on his face. This “one stop shopping” made my day infinitely easier. "Tom, I wanted to reach out to share with you the exceptional experience I have had with Chris during my computer issues. I am sure the majority of the emails you receive are about issues and problems with the people that create these issues. This is not that type of email. I started having serious issues with my computer. Chris looked at the issues and spent an entire day checking on the computer and the solution options he was working on. He found that the computer issues were not easily repairable, but he was going to try. All the while he was working on my computer; he was building another computer to assure I didn’t have to really have down time. As you may know…I have a new computer. I had zero down time due to his planning and efforts. The new computer had the most current office suite and such.  Like all people, I understand the need for changes to make progress, but still, I’m as resistant as the next end user. He took the time to show my how to set up the things I needed to do. I did them overnight with no problems. He did follow-up on his own the next day to see if there were any issues."

"Since then, I have had 8-10 questions on things that are office/explorer user questions. He never lost patience with me. That was a ONE MINUTE response and it came long after business hours! Jessica's lightning-fast, after-hours response to my email motivated me to step up my game with my team and my clients the following morning.
