Inspire ME Friday: Happy International Day of Happiness!

“People think it’s going to be perfect as soon as this ‘thing’ happens, but no. It has a very short term effect. Don’t count on climate making you happier, either. A recent report found the state where residents feel most content is Alaska.

Good Morning Folks,

For the last two years, the United Nations has set aside March 20 as a time to recognize “the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings.”

The Today show explains:

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Here are 10 insights into happiness:

1. Relationships are crucial

If you had to name one key to happiness, it would be relationships, said Gretchen Rubin, author of “The Happiness Project” and the new book “Better Than Before.” That means romantic relationships, friendships, close ties with siblings and colleagues —any meaningful and deep bonds with people you like.

“If you’re thinking about how to be happier, thinking about how to deepen or broaden your relationships is probably a really good place to start,” Rubin said.

“We need to have enduring, intimate relationships. We need to be able to confide. We need to feel like we belong. We need to be able to get support and just as important for happiness, we need to be able to give support.”

2. Be around happy people

Relationships are particularly beneficial when they involve people who are joyful, Sanderson said.

“Happiness seems to be a bit contagious, so if you’re friends with somebody who is happy, it actually increases your own happiness,” she noted.

Sanderson said she’s not talking about Facebook friends, but being around people you care about and giving them your full attention. Don’t mistake texting or messaging on social media for having a meaningful conversation.

3. Your genes predetermine some of the happiness you feel

Research suggests about 50 percent of happiness is hardwired; 10-20 percent is determined by life circumstances, such as age, health, and income; while the rest is very much a reflection of your conscious thoughts and actions, Rubin said.

People for whom happiness does not come very naturally should take more deliberate steps toward being happier, Sanderson noted. (See tip No. 7)

4. Focus on being happier rather than happy

It’s hard to define happiness. For some people it may mean a feeling of euphoria or overwhelming joy, for others it’s more about peace and contentment. Whatever your definition, find ways to have more of it in your life.

“Think about, ‘What could I do that would make me happier?’ and don’t worry about achieving happiness, which can sound like this very abstract finish line. What does that look like? How would you get there?” Rubin advised.

5. Money isn’t everything but…

The link between money and happiness is not very strong for people who live above the poverty line, Sanderson said. One study found that once you make $75,000 a year, money doesn’t have much of an effect on your contentment.

Another examined the well-being of very wealthy Americans and found they were indeed happier than ordinary people, but not by much. The authors noted that although “money may aid happiness, it certainly is no guarantee of happiness.”

Still, Rubin pointed out healthy finances do play a role.

“The thing about money is that it doesn’t necessarily buy happiness, but it can buy many things that contribute greatly to happiness. It’s how you’re spending it,” she said.

6. Experiences are better than possessions, except…

You’ve probably heard that spending money on experiences, like a wine tasting tour or tickets to a Broadway show, boosts happiness more than buying possessions, like jewelry or a new iPhone.

One study found spending on experiences boosted the “feeling of being alive.” Another discovered that purchases boosted happiness only when people spent money on cars or leisure.

But Rubin said it’s not as simple as saying possessions don’t matter.

“Is a dog an experience or a possession? Is a bicycle an experience or a possession? Is a dining room table that means you can have people over for dinner an experience or a possession?” she asked. “Some people care deeply and get enormous satisfaction from possessions.”

7. Small things can make you happy

Sanderson suggested these instant mood lifters:

  • Take a walk outside
  • Read a book that you love
  • Exercise to trigger the release of endorphins, your body’s feel-good chemicals
  • Get enough sleep
  • Take a broader view: Parents often report low levels of joy on a day-to-day basis, for example, but find parenting very meaningful when they consider the overall impact of kids on their lives, Sanderson said.

8. Things you think will make you happy often don’t

Don’t fall for the trap of thinking “I will be happy when…” – “I get married” or “I get a promotion” or “I retire.”

“People think it’s going to be perfect as soon as this ‘thing’ happens, but no. It has a very short term effect,” Sanderson said. “One of the challenges is that we just adapt to it.”

Don’t count on climate making you happier, either, she noted. Living in California might sound more blissful than moving to North Dakota, but you eventually adjust to whatever climate you’re in. A recent report found the state where residents feel most content is Alaska.

9. Happiness increases with age

It turns out youth doesn’t necessarily translate into bliss.

“When you’re older, you don’t waste time on things that aren’t important to you… you focus on the things that really fulfill you,” Rubin said.

“A lot of things, by the time you’re older, have worked themselves out. You’ve made your peace with who you are.”

10. Know yourself

Self-knowledge is crucial to happiness, Rubin said. So if you’re not a morning person, but decide to get up early each day to squeeze in a workout, you’ll be miserable.

“We’re happy when our life reflects our nature, our values, our interests. The more you know yourself, the more you can make decisions that are going to help you bring your life into harmony with what’s true about you,” she noted.

Thanks to @gretchenrubin and Catherine Sanderson and Today.com for offering10 basic rules for a happier life.

I'm not sure after this winter I agree with "Don’t count on climate making you happier, either, she noted. Living in California might sound more blissful than moving to North Dakota, but you eventually adjust to whatever climate you’re in. A recent report found the state where residents feel most content is Alaska."

With that in mind, have a Spring-filled weekend with love and happiness all around.

And now one more time, the song that never gets old with 609 million YouTube views (no wonder the Gaye family is listening)....

Have a GREAT WEEKEND!

“We need to believe in the impossible and remove the improbable” ~~Oscar Wilde

"Permanent happiness comes from you choosing to be permanently happy. When you choose happiness, then you attract all the happy things as well. The happy things are the icing on the cake, but the cake is happiness" ~~Rhonda Byrne

Good Morning Folks,

Whether it is health, money, a loving relationship, material things, accomplishments, a job, or anything at all, the desire for happiness is the bottom line of all of them. But remember that happiness is a state inside of us, and something on the outside can only bring fleeting happiness, because material things are impermanent.

Regardless of your looks, skills or intelligence, or what struggles you have had in your life --  if you don’t have a good attitude, if you don’t believe that happiness is a “choice”, if you don’t believe you can accomplish great things then you will never achieve success.

Look around you. You work for a HAPPY company, with a Chief HAPPINESS Officer at the helm - who truly wants you to be happy, who gives you all the tools, opportunities and support to grow and be happy at what you do. You know why?

Unhappy people, negative people, uncooperative people, complaining people just attract more unhappiness, negativity and difficulty into their lives. Those people can never truly be PERSONAL, PASSIONATE and PRODUCTIVE.

But... on the FSO side of the coin... happy employees are contagious. Happy employees create a great work environment, and happy employees create more opportunity.

Our Sales, Marketing, and Operations teams are firing on all cylinders! We have the competition on their heels, with more and more of their clients taking a serious look at FSO and deciding that we are the only real choice when it comes to outsourcing.

The FSO Train is screaming down the track, exceeding our client’s expectations and delivering on our promise to love and nurture our most valuable asset, our employees!

==>  FSO is the Fastest growing outsourcer in the Industry
==>  FSO is the displacing its competitors every day
==>  FSO is the best place to work in the industry
==>  FSO is providing thousands a chance to reach their goals
==>  FSO is the most sought out company in the industry to work

What a great thing to say about your job!

I talk to a lot of prospects that have our competitors currently. EVERY time I speak with them I get a bit nauseas because they tell me they are marginally happy, that they do not get any ideas from the current provider, that the staff onsite isn’t happy, that the management from the current company has never been to the site or met with them, that the local manager never provides reports, and the list goes on. UGH! I have seen the great work we do on-site and I am a true believer that (re)Imagine is our differentiator.

Every time we (re)Imagine we win! Do not underestimate the impact that wiping off finger prints on a glass door can have. Do not underestimate the impact of your smile on a customer. Little things like straightening up an unsightly lobby, helping to set up a conference room when it is not our service agreement, it is the kind words and great attitude and providing ideas and recommendations for improvements.

Your career and your growth is top of mind for me every single moment of the day. We have excitement in our company and I want you all to be excited.

YOU are always appreciated for what YOU do, being who YOU are and the role YOU play in the company. Without YOU there could be no FSO.

Set your goals and expectations high but more importantly, achieve them.

Have a great day and thanks for being a part of our amazing journey.

Ted Tuesday: Margaret Heffernan- Dare to Disagree

"The truth won't set us free until we develop the skills and the moral courage to use it."

    Good Morning Folks,

Good disagreement is central to progress.

Being honest and true to self is not always easy but it's more conducive to positive change.

Most people instinctively avoid conflict, but as Margaret Heffernan shows us, good disagreement is central to progress. She illustrates (sometimes counter intuitively) how the best partners aren’t echo chambers — and how great research teams, relationships and businesses allow people to deeply disagree.

The former CEO of five businesses, Margaret Heffernan explores the all-too-human thought patterns — like conflict avoidance and selective blindness — that lead managers and organizations astray.

Probably my favorite Ted talk ever. Speak truth. Because if you don't it will run over you.

    Here's Margaret:

    Thanks to you for listening.

Ted Tuesday— Andrew Stanton: The Clues To A Great Story

"Wonder is honest, it's completely innocent.
    It can't be artificially evoked."

    Good Morning Folks,

A good story can make a campfire that much eerier. A good story can flip a conversation at a party from completely awkward to wonderful. Good story telling skills separate the GREAT sales people from the mediocre.

A good story can glue your nose to a book. And, on screen, a good story can rivet generation after generation.

Whether it is something you want to sell, to make others see your point or just something you want to share. If it comes with a good story, something the listener can relate to, that is true to you as the teller of the story. That is a good story! One that the other will remember and even retell to friends or relatives.

So, uh, how do you tell one?

With millions of views racked up already on Ted and YouTube, Filmmaker Andrew Stanton ("Toy Story," "WALL-E") shares what he knows about storytelling — starting at the end and working back to the beginning.

Below, from the Ted Blog, see his golden rules of storytelling visualized by Karin Hueck and Rafael Quick of the Brazilian culture and science magazine Superinteressante. Each month, the magazine’s editors take a TED Talk and give it to their graphic wizards to interpret in any way they see fit. Here, a reimagining of Stanton’s talk on stories. Via the Ugly Duckling. Just click the image to see a larger version.

Andrew Stanton wrote the first film produced entirely on a computer, Toy Story. But what made that film a classic wasn't the history-making graphic technology -- it's the story, the heart, the characters that children around the world instantly accepted into their own lives.

Stanton wrote all three Toy Story movies at Pixar Animation Studios, where he was hired in 1990 as the second animator on staff. He has two Oscars, as the writer-director of Finding Nemo, WALL-E and his fantasy-adventure movie John Carter.

So tell a good story, it will make an impression that lasts.

    Thanks to you for listening.

    Have a GREAT Day,

Ted Tuesday: My simple invention, designed to keep my grandfather safe

What level of college do you need to be to be an inventor and win scholarships, awards and seed money? How about Kindergarten!

    Good Morning Folks,

Every day our success at FSO comes from identifying problems customers are facing and bringing together a productive mix of People + Solutions + Technology to solve them. Today's guest works much the same way.

Kenneth Shinozuka designs smart products ... He's been doing so since he was in kindergarten.

When he was six years old, a family friend of Kenneth Shinozuka fell down in the bathroom. The friend was ok -- but the incident inspired him to design a motion detection system that could be embedded in bathroom tiles. He never actually made one in real life (remember, he was only six) ... but he was hooked on both the promise of invention and the potential of technology.

Since then, Shinozuka has designed smart devices for his grandfather, who has Alzheimer's disease. One invention that caught the eye of both the media and awards programs such as the Google Science Fair: a pair of smart socks, designed to send an alert to a caregiver if a patient gets out of bed. In 2014, he won the $50,000 Scientific American Science in Action Award, while he was also a 2014 Davidson Fellow.

Today's talk is about the device he created for his grandfather. Sixty percent of people with dementia wander off, an issue that can prove hugely stressful for both patients and caregivers. In this charming talk, hear how teen inventor Kenneth Shinozuka came up with a novel solution to help his night-wandering grandfather and the aunt who looks after him ... and how he hopes to help others with Alzheimer's. Have a look...

Boy, after watching that I'm embarrassed at what I thought was a productive day for me. How it should make you feel is that anything is possible here in the greatest country on Earth and my goal is to provide all of our employees an opportunity to realize their own true human potential right here at FSO.

Ted Tuesday: How Do Dogs See With Their Noses - Alexandra Horowitz

Is this the reason why dogs sniff other dogs' butts?  (They have sent glands on their butts that tell them who individuals are and about their emotion/mood and health.)

    Good Morning Folks,

Welcome to Ted Tuesdays where we inform and delight sharing my favorite inspirational talks from Ted. Ted is one of the best things that's been made possible by the Internet that was never possible before. It's opened up a world of knowledge delivered to your desktop that enhances life's experience.

I have dozens of Ted talks bookmarked to share with you. But this weekend I came across a just released one that I thought it was super interesting! If you've ever wondered why dogs have to sniff every single thing they come across then this will probably shed some light! I would gladly trade our "better" sense of sight for a canine-like sense of smell! It's crazy the amount of things you can pick up on and has made the world of dogs much more interesting to me!

You may have heard the expression that dogs ‘see with their noses.’ But these creature’s amazing nasal architecture actually reveals a whole world beyond what we can see. Alexandra Horowitz illustrates how the dog’s nose can smell the past, the future and even things that can’t be seen at all.

Their sense of smell is 100 million times more sensitive than humans'. They can read minds -- sensing emotions through smell. They can see the past, by sensing lingering odors of people and creatures that have moved on. And they can see the future, smelling oncoming people and creatures before they arrive.

Also, they can sense what direction a smell is coming from, and the direction it's going.

Lets us learn How do dogs see with their noses - Alexandra Horowitz (HD)
I haver been told that when dogs go the dog park the attraction is to "read the newspaper" sniffing out who else was there when and with how,

Well I just learned a thing or two about our own dogs. Who says an old dog like me can't learn some new tricks? j How about you?

    Thanks for listening.

    Have a GREAT Day,

    Mitchell D. Weiner

Ted Tuesday: Brené Brown: The Power of Vulnerability

“You’re imperfect, and you’re wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging.” Brené Brown studies vulnerability, courage, authenticity, and shame.

    Good Morning Folks.

Brené Brown, Ph.D., LMSW is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. She has spent the past decade studying vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame.

Her 2010 TEDx Houston talk on the power of vulnerability is one of the most watched talks on TED.com, with over 18 million views. She gave the closing talk, Listening to Shame,  at the 2012 TED Conference in Long Beach.

Brené is the author of the #1 New York Times Bestseller Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead (2012). She is also the author of the #1 New York Times Bestseller The Gifts of Imperfection (2010), and I Thought It Was Just Me (2007).

Brené is also the founder and CEO of The Daring Way – a teaching and certification program for helping professionals who want to facilitate her work on vulnerability, courage, shame, and worthiness.

Brené Brown studies human connection — our ability to empathize, belong, love. In a poignant, funny talk, she shares a deep insight from her research, one that sent her on a personal quest to know herself as well as to understand humanity. A talk to share.

Here’s the thing: Brown: A few years ago she had a nervous breakdown and started to see a therapist. 'The therapist said to me, “You have to embrace your vulnerability,” and I was like, “Screw that.”’

In her new book she writes, 'We are hardwired to connect with others, it’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives… Before I knew it, I had been hijacked by my research participants who, when asked to talk about their most important relationships and experiences of connection, kept telling me about heartbreak, betrayal and shame – the fear of not being worthy of real connection.’

As part of her work she tried first to understand why a handful of people believe in their own worthiness; she calls these people 'Wholehearted’. She loses me a bit here. Is Wholehearted another word for happy, I ask her? 'No,’ she says adamantly. 'In fact I think our capacity for Wholeheartedness can never be greater than our willingness to be broken-hearted. It means engaging with the world from a place of vulnerability and worthiness. It’s about being all in, saying, “I’m here and I’m going to love you fully and if you cheat on me you’re going to devastate me and break my heart, but I’m not holding back because this is short.”’

Tears spring to her eyes as she says this. In fact, it was her realization that she herself fell far short of Wholehearted that tipped her over the edge.

Brené Brown is an absolute legend. This is groundbreaking - not in terms of peoples awareness of these subjects and what they mean... But in these messages enhanced communication made accessible to a wider audience on this level. Really awesome stuff.

Thanks to The Telegraph for inspiring me to watch this talk, and to you for listening.

Ted Tuesday: Choose Yourself— The One Secret For Doing A TED Talk (Or Any Talk)

“If you don’t make the choices in your own life, then someone else is going to end up making them for you, and it won’t be good.”

    Good Morning Folks,

Today a must watch of James Altucher, an amazing writer at TED talk! James has helped me CHOOSE MYSELF in the past year through his books, blogs and Podcasts.

James is a successful entrepreneur, chess master, investor and writer. He is the author of the WSJ and Amazon Best-Sellers “Choose Yourself” and “The Power Of No” as well as ten other books. He has started and run more than 20 companies, and sold several of those businesses for large exits and failed miserably at all the rest. His book “Choose Yourself” explains how he rose from repeated failure to find success. He has also run venture capital funds, hedge funds, is an active angel investor, and currently sits on the boards of several companies.

Says James, "Giving a talk is the worst thing you can do to your body. First off, you want to pee, crap, and puke right before you go on stage. In other words, your body thinks it's about to die."

His secret: "I've already written that before I give a talk I listen to standup comedy. It triggers the mirror neurons in my brain and helps me to relax, and maybe mimic how they work their voices and bodies, and helps me to connect better with the audience."

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. James Altucher is now considered to be a renowned author and serial entrepreneur, but in this brutally honest talk, injected with outrageous humor, he reveals how at one point failure led him to consider suicide, and how he turned his life around by following five key practices.

Improve your physical health (focus on exercise and diet), improve your emotional health (be around people that you love and trust), improve you spiritual health (always expressing gratitude), capture your brilliance (write down ten ideas every day), and finally, give without expectation (give your ideas away).

“If you don’t make the choices in your own life, then someone else is going to end up making them for you, and it won’t be good.” Have a look:

EXCELLENT job, James. I love the honesty, the vulnerability, the humor, & teachings. Well done. :)
