Inspire ME Friday: Actor James Franco Worked His Way Up From a Mc Donald's Kitchen; We Have A Better Idea For You

Good Morning Folks,

Before stardom, James Franco was just a fast-food employee eating fries straight from the hopper. He was, as I was once, a member of the infamous "forgotten demographic" that I have dedicated my life to creating opportunities for.

This story by James Franco in the Washington Post is maybe the strangest op-ed I've ever read on the topic. It speaks to the current climate of employment in this country and the principles of hard work and passion.

"I dropped out of college and went to a hole-in-the-wall acting school in the Valley. My parents, who both had master’s degrees and valued education, told me I would have to support myself if I wasn’t enrolled in college. 

I didn’t have a car, so I tried to get a job at all the restaurants within walking distance of my post-dropout Valley apartment. (I shared it with two other aspiring actors and slept on the couch.) I had very little work experience. In high school, I was fired from a coffee shop for reading behind the counter and from a golf course for reading while driving the cart on the driving range. All the waiter jobs were taken by more experienced actor/waiters. 

Someone asked me if I was too good to work at McDonald’s. Because I was following my acting dream despite all the pressure not to, I was definitely not too good to work at McDonald’s. I went to the nearest Mickey D’s and was hired the same day. 

I was given the late shift drive-thru position. I wore a purple visor and purple polo shirt and took orders over a headset. I refrained from reading on the job, but soon started putting on fake accents with the customers to practice for my scenes in acting class."  Continued....

I hope everyone had an amazing weekend - especially after an awesome week at FSO! 

We had the second CHO Club last week - which was just amazing!!  (and we have the pictures to prove it)!

I along with the entire ELT LOVE nothing more than celebrating YOU, our valued employees! 

Our company is growing and nothing is going to stop us. We are too strong. Focused. Passionate and committed to making FSO the number one on site outsourcing company on the planet. 

The quest for growth is always powered by a thirst for change. Seth Godin, one of  marketing's brightest minds put it this way in a blog post this weekend:

At the congregation down the street, they're doing things the way they've done them for the last few hundred years. Every week, people come, attracted by familiarity, by the family and friends around them, part of a tribe.

And just past that building is another one, a different tribe, where the tradition is more than a thousand years old. 

This is not so different from that big company that used to be an internet startup, but all the original team members have long left the building. Work tomorrow has a lot in common with work yesterday, and the safety of it all is comforting. 

Che, Jefferson, Edison, Ford... most of these radicals would not recognize the institutions that have been built over time. 

The question each of us has to answer about the institution we care about is: Does this place exist to maintain and perpetuate the status quo, or am I here to do the work that the radical founder had in mind when we started? 

First principles. The quest for growth, or for change, or for justice. The ability, perhaps the desire, to seek out things that feel risky. 

All of us are part of organizations that were started by outliers, by radicals, by people who cared more about making a difference than fitting in.

CHO Club April: Stars Make Their Mark On The FSO Walk of Fame

The sign of making it in Hollywood is to have your hand prints make their mark by being enshrined in the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The equivalent at FSO is being nominated to participate in our monthly CHO Club. The CHO club is just another example of going above and beyond to say thanks to the wonderful people who serve our clients each and every day. These monthly recognition meetings provide the perfect platform to award, recognize and incentivize our top performers.

Some thought that our March event, which I blogged about here, couldn't be topped. Well last night it was. I loved the night, loved the people and the people loved us. 

Today I write to say, THANK YOU for INSPIRING ME. Yesterday's CHO club was perfect, exciting, and most important INSPIRING.

I so enjoy when we have a casual time to chat, recognize your victories, listen to your ideas, wins, strategies and hopes for personal accomplishments.

I made it my business to speak to every award winner including Dianne who could not talk, but made it. Lol…

Commented an employee: "Just felt I needed to thank you once again for yesterdays CHO Club get together. It was an honor to be chosen and the venue was awesome. So many people work for companies and don't have the privilege of being able to interact with the President and Founders let alone share a drink with them after work! THIS is what sets us aside from the competition! These events are great because it puts us in touch with one another. The personal aspect of FSO is alive and well in this company."

The teams were on fire and it is so easy for me to see clearly our FLP, and MRP winners today and into the future.

I left with Chelsea last night so happy with your accomplishments and how that completely translates into our client experience. It was my highlight of the year so far and I am already thinking of cool new locations like last night for May's event

It's because FSO loves nothing more than rewarding our hard-working and valued employees! Our employees represent FSO with confidence, knowledge, professionalism, smiles and a spark. From myself and the Executive Leadership Team to all of our employees across the nation – we want to say thank you for always helping us to reach these goals and congratulations to all the winners from headquarters and the field. 

Spread the word. Our next next “thank you event” of the year is just around there corner. The CHO Club will be at the end of May. Membership in the club is awarded based on ideas, strategies and cost savings suggested to the client and kudos received from clients.

I'm sure calling this the best peeler in the world is an exaggeration, but with a sales pitch like that how can you refuse this man?  Not to mention, I'd rather give my money to someone working hard like this than another big box store.his from any dollar store, but I'd go out of my way to buy one from him given the chance.

You can buy these things in Europe, but i would still buy one just because of how awesome the skills of his sales techniques are.

Five and a half years later and we experience this beautiful moment in the benign milieu of human interaction. Bless him and his enthusiasm and perspective; it isn't life and death nor is it (seemingly) make or break. Perhaps what is so appealing and inviting is that he seems already comfortable with where he is? How many times have we been dissuaded from interacting with people on the street (be them vendors or pitchmen) because we perceive them as less than us or less well-off than us in our current situations?  I'm just smitten with this man and this moment. 

Well said, he was a charming and classy gentleman. He spoke to everyone on the street rich or poor. He was the street.

Defines a salesman.  I walk up totally disinterested honestly I never even cook.  I walk away with 5 of the darn things.  Get home realize I'll never use said items exclaim, "How the hell did he do that?"

The problem is not because he's a great salesman... but the item hes selling is convincing anyway... sure this guy have great way to show the usefulness of the item... but if you got no interest in the item i don't think it's gonna sell..

I had never heard of this gent, but last spring I was serving jury duty in Brooklyn and saw him across the street from the courthouse.  I *had* to buy from him -- his bit hearkens to another time and age.  I can't use the peeler without thinking of him, and regretting I didn't buy some as gifts if only to but from him and reward him for the memory he's given me, and apparently many others.

when i found out he died i genuinely cried. me and my friend loved this guy so much we always impersonated him and had laughs. we miss him so much. he had his routine down to a word. my fav line is "they're made of stainless steel they CANNOT RUST"
