LinkUp Thursday: A Great Summer Read

"For anyone interested in technology, entrepreneurship or the price of greatness, Ashlee Vance's new book, "Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX and the Quest for a Fantastic Future," is a tremendous look into arguably the world's most important entrepreneur. Vance paints an unforgettable picture of Musk's unique personality, insatiable drive and ability to thrive through hardship. The book bursts with telling anecdotes and quotes that illuminate who Musk is". - The Washington Post

Good Morning Folks,

With the holiday season upon us, we'll all be spending more time in airplanes, on boats and on the beach. It might be the perfect quiet time to put away the Smart Phone and enlighten ourselves with an inspiring business story.

I just finished the new Musk book. Has America lost its ability to think beyond the fancy dinners, yachts and houses the quick buck might provide? Our greatest American 'capitalists' did not pursue money. They pursued causes and changed the world in the process. Maybe Musk will get to mars, maybe he won't. Maybe Tesla will be able to deliver a $40k fully electric car, or maybe not. But the essence of his pursuit, the reason he risked everything he owned every day, is the interesting aspect of this book. Capital was a means to an end (eliminate the need for fossil fuels; find a place where mankind can go when we eventually and inevitably destroy this beautiful earth), not the end. Highly recommended and very thought provoking.  Order on Amazon HERE

Recently in a standing room only event at Apple Inc.’s shiny SoHo store, people packed in to listen to Steve Jobs’ biographers talk the iconic CEO’s life and legacy.

But as it now should, the discussion shifted beyond just how the iPhone inventor should be remembered, to who the next great visionary might be. The more important question now is not that of Jobs’ legacy, but whether there is, or will be, anyone in the same orbit as Jobs that has the ability to greatly shape civilization for the better.

For Schlender, the answer is Elon Musk, the Tesla Motors Inc. TSLA, -2.07%  and Space-X CEO, and chairman of SolarCity Corp. SCTY, +0.18% for his space aspirations—Musk ultimately wants to set up a human colony on Mars—and electric car. Musk, he says, has “the track record and ability to build enthusiasm and paint a beautiful picture of how the future should be,” similar to the way Jobs could.

Read this book and you will see why.

Meanwhile we do as Musk does: WOW our clients!  WOW our employees!  Roll out the Red Carpet!  Ensure White Glove Service!  Perfect professional images!  Make a difference to ensure our clients Feel the Experience!

Have a happy, smiling and productive day.

The Right Way to Brag About Yourself
And why humble bragging backfires.
In both our social and professional interactions, we commonly focus on managing the impressions that others form of us, especially when these others do not know us well. In fact, when we first approach these situations and stakes are high (such as during a job interview, a meeting with a new client, or an important first date), we often receive the same advice from colleagues, mentors, and friends: try to make a good impression. After all, making a positive impression on others often translates into important long-term outcomes, such as getting the job or starting a romantic relationship. Though this is generally good advice, our intuitions on what types of strategies will create a positive impression are often wrong.

How to Spend the Last 10 Minutes of Your Day
How much sleep did you get last night? If the answer is “not enough” you’re hardly alone. According to Gallup’s estimates, almost half the people you’ll run into today are suffering from some level of sleep deprivation. So, how do you get to bed earlier and get more sleep? Here are a few suggestions, based on goal-setting research.

You’re Not a Quitter. You’re Just Not Engaged.
As I read the various posts for the LinkedIn #IQuit series, there seems to be an overall feeling of remorse by people leaving their companies. If you are moving on, taking a new direction, looking to better yourself, however you want to phrase it, don’t feel bad. Unless you are in a small company that you’ve professed your dedication or have made a commitment to, most of the time, your company is going to get along just fine without you. I know, that sounds cold. Your colleagues are your friends, and you’ve spent an enormous amount of time with them. The real question is “why are you leaving?” A few articles I’ve read on LinkedIn talk about “sucking the soul from me,” “I’m just bored,” or “I just didn’t feel like I was making a difference anymore.” Is this your fault? Maybe. But, probably not.

Inspire ME Friday: Future Internet Moguls Discover The Power of Focus

"I have also learned that being focused means saying “No” a lot more. I used to have a big problem with no. People would invite me to grab coffee with them and I would always say yes without thinking about how that would impact my day."

Good Morning Folks,

Behold the power of the Internet where anyone with coding skills and a great idea can change the course of business and its results.

A case in point is the story of Morgan and Daina Linton, the husband/wife team who founded Fashion Metric to banish ill-fitting clothes.

Anyone who’s ever ordered clothes online knows that getting an item that fits is by all means hit and miss. Fashion Metric is a self-described “virtual tailor” SaaS startup that provides consumers with a way to automatically find out if an article of clothing will fit their body without having to try it on.

“We’ve built software that acts as a virtual tailor,” Daina Linton said.

Fashion Metric’s technology also offers online retailers an added benefit of minimizing returns, which makes sense since the majority of those returns would happen because something didn’t fit correctly. The startup has raised under $1 million in funding from Mark Cuban, BazaarVoice founder Brett Hurt, and the former chairman and CEO of Neiman Marcus.

But putting the "start" in startup was a long, painful process until the couple discovered the POWER of FOCUS. Morgan explained in his blog this week:
Over the last two years I’ve learned a lot about the power of focus. Rewind three years ago and I was a guy who had a lot of “projects” going on all the time. When people asked what I did I would usually say, “My full time job is at Sonos but I also run a lot of websites, broker domain names, build software to appraise website sales, speak at conferences, oh and I write books.”
I thought this sounded impressive, I was wrong.
Fast forward to today and I have no projects, I am completely focused on Fashion Metric, and that focus has been incredibly valuable both for our company and our lives. While I still write this blog I see writing as something that I have always planned to do forever, I see it as my creative outlet and I spend no more than twenty minutes a day on it.
Both Daina and I spend all day, every day focused on Fashion Metric. We’re up at around 6AM, are usually at work before 8AM and it’s rare for us to leave before 7PM. We don’t do this because we have to, we do it because we absolutely love it, this has been our dream and we know we couldn’t do what we are doing now without incredible focus.
I have also learned that being focused means saying “No” a lot more. I used to have a big problem with no. People would invite me to grab coffee with them and I would always say yes without thinking about how that would impact my day. Everything my friends did I wanted to do with them. Now I’ve learned that I can’t say yes to everything and still maintain the level of focus that I need, I had to get better at saying no. The good news is, true friends will understand and those who aren’t might not.
It’s an amazing transformation I’ve gone through over the last three years and an incredibly realization that you (or at least for me) can’t have a day job and do a bunch of “projects” without spreading yourself too thin and not giving enough focus to something that really matters. I can understand why the old adage “do what you love” still rings true today because when you focus and do what you truly enjoy all those projects disappear and life, while more intense than ever, becomes more fulfilling.
So ask yourself, “Am I that person who is doing a million projects?” And if that is you imagine what you could accomplish with a bit more focus.
Have a GREAT WEEKEND!

Inspire ME Friday: "We All Shine As Individuals, But We Are On Fire As A Team!"

"I talk to my team. I listen to my team. I advocate for my team. But most importantly, I respect my team, and that comes back to me AND the client ten-fold."

Good Morning Folks,

To be the best of the best in our industry we need all engines of FSO firing across the nation. From our front end sales team to our hardworking operations team - our success depends on everyone of us supporting each other with care, respect and commitment.

I often refer to the wonderful motivational messages that are being communicated throughout the week internally at FSO by folks from all walks of the company.

Today I'd like to share a recent message from Business Experience Manager Andrew Kleinwaks, leader of the co-winning team that took home the 2014 Site of the Year for PwC and FSO.  Andrew....

"As a co-winner of the 2014 Site of the Year for PwC and FSO, I have been asked to deliver a message this morning describing what it took to get us to that point. The answer is simple. Hard work, dedication, and pride.

The FSO message is, and has always been to put the client first. After all, without the client, I wouldn’t be writing this, and you wouldn’t be reading it. But, for folks with a strong work ethic, putting the client first comes naturally, whether in an outsourced environment or as a direct hire. Providing a high level of service and top tier hospitality comes naturally as well. It’s not faked, it’s not forced, it’s not contrived. There has to be that certain gene within your make-up that drives you to excel; one that gives you the passion. As a certain RD I know & respect once commented, “You can’t fake passion”.

The Florham Park Team has to “make the sale” each and every day. We are selling the Mitch Brand. We’re selling the FSO Brand. But just as importantly, we’re selling our individual brand. What we do here on any given day defines us as individuals. If our individual brand excels, so too do the Mitch & FSO Brands. When I meet with candidates for spots on my team, I let them know what is expected of them, and challenge them to tell me how they would meet those expectations. I want specific examples.

Once on board, they’re trained how to practice hospitality our way. Some minor tweaks are required, because of our brand. We practice the 10/4 rule daily, we provide exceptional hospitality at every turn, we garner as many Kudo’s as we can (but not as many as we deserve), and maintain a near spotless facility. We display the Skip, the Twinkle and the Fire day in and day out. This is a direct reflection on my team as a group, the members individually, myself as their on-site leadership, and FSO on the whole. We’re selling a package deal.

In just over a year, our team has collected close to 100 Kudo’s from the client. One member of this team received 20 in a two month period. An exceptional achievement to say the least. Sure, these are simply postcards signed by Mitch & Jim, acknowledging an achievement, but more importantly, they validate for the employee that he or she accomplished what they set out to do when they walked in the door: WOW the client. Deliver a client experience unlike any they have had in the past. Be proud of a job well done.

It’s hard work to maintain the site. It’s the dedication that each of my team members have to me, to the client and to FSO. It’s the pride they take in leaving at the end of the day knowing they have performed at their peak. I ask them for nothing less, and often get more.  The drive displayed by my team shows with each floor-walk, and with each submission of monthly KPI’s. We are scoring consistent 5’s across the board. Are we perfect? Of course not, but we try to come as close as we possibly can each and every day.

I talk to my team. I listen to my team. I advocate for my team.  But most importantly, I respect my team, and that comes back to me AND the client ten-fold.

All our efforts in Florham Park culminated on January 7, when 2 members of our team (Nick Gonnella – Associate of the Month – Galactic Group, and myself for Manager of the Year), AND the site were nominated for awards. Simply having nominations in three categories would have been enough for me, but taking home one of the trophies for Site of The Year couldn’t have made me more proud of the team we have assembled here. We all shine as individuals, but we are on fire as a team."
I hope from the field messages such as this you have been reading from 2014 Winners that you have been hearing a common thread.

FSO's Business operations managers (BOM's) or Experience Managers take ownership of their sites, their employees and their client. They proudly represent FSO in so many of the right ways which includes:

1.Building a great team at their site.
A smart BOM may have recruited for their own team members or spotted great talent and made sure they joined their site.

You can only achieve this if you embed yourself into the industry and FSO. Get to know who's who and use the resources available to you when needed. You should be proud of every single member of your team and only settle for the best of the best.

2. Knowledge - a great BOM runs their site with a business mentality.
Always looking for ways to apply best practices, increase productivity, add value, do more with less and always look for ways to EXPAND onsite services. That is what is expected of you as a leader. Knowledge and leadership ensures that your team is focused on the right SLAs and KPIs and delivering with perfection.

3. Owning the client and loving the employees.
A BOM's relationship with their client contact is professional, respectful and rock solid. You take care of their operations and they will take care of FSO. Mistakes will happen however if you have done right by our client they will do right by you. This means operating with integrity, honesty, care and trust.

A true BOM is always recognizing great work and those who go above and beyond at their site. They are training their staff and not holding great talent back - but nurturing and looking for ways to promote their employees.  As FSO grows, we are always looking to promote people.

I hope you look forward to reading more success stories like this one as I do. I can only ask that our leaders in the field all take a big step up together and work towards building a company that is truly the best of the best.

Good Morning FSO-USA, and Happy Friday!

Have a Happy, Healthy, Safe and Refreshing Weekend,

Love Life!
