TED Tuesday: Steven Addis: A Father-Daughter Bond, One Photo At A Time

Good Morning Folks,

In this attention deficit age where kids are too busy on their cell phones to even look up at their parents at dinner, here is an activity you can do together with your phone and selfies, that will have lasting meaning and help build stronger parent/child bonds.

Todays TEDTalk tells a story that reminds me of last year's Academy-Award nominee and winner Boyhood.

It's of a father, who once took a picture with his daughter on a corner in NYC and decided to replicate it the next year. This goes on for fifteen years and he speaks about how meaningful this tradition became to both himself and his daughter. Steven Addis is a photographer, film buff and writer. He started an agency, Addis Creston, that creates “positive change by working with clients to market meaningful products and to improve their social benefit”. The main point the presenter is making about the topic is that a picture really can mean a thousand words. He literally showed fifteen images and spoke about each one as an individual story to support the point he was making. 

What made him choose this talk were the words “father-daughter bond” in the title?

"It made me thing about my father and our relationship, so I was interested in someone else’s. The presenter has impacted the way I view his topic by in a sense where I now wish my father had done the same thing with me. One idea I will take away from the talk is this idea of how much a series of reoccurring photos can mean and how I would like to continue this tradition when I have children."

So these photos are far more than proxies for a single moment, or even a specific trip. They're also ways for us to freeze time for one week in October and reflect on our times and how we change from year to year, and not just physically, but in every way. Because while we take the same photo, our perspectives change, and she reaches new milestones, and I get to see life through her eyes, and how she interacts with and sees everything. This very focused time we get to spend together is something we cherish and anticipate the entire year.

Concludes Addis,"So I want to share the idea of taking an active role in consciously creating memories. I don't know about you, but aside from these 15 shots, I'm not in many of the family photos. I'm always the one taking the picture. So I want to encourage everyone today to get in the shot, and don't hesitate to go up to someone and ask, 'Will you take our picture?''

Welcome back from what I trust was a great 4th of July and holiday weekend for all. I hope everyone had an awesome long weekend and was able celebrate and enjoy some FUN with family and friends.

For all the blood, sweat and tears, Americans join me this morning celebrating our country's historic soccer win which roused the nation Sunday, sparking celebrations far and wide, online and off. Today we are World Cup champions, and forever we are World Cup champions!

Whereas women playing soccer was novelty the first time around, this time it validated women as sportsmen. Individuals who trained for years to kick off in top condition and come together as each instrument does in an orchestra in perfect harmony. The power of many succeeding as one. 

As one fan tweeted, "For all the heartbreak #USWNT has experienced since last World Cup victory, my 3yo daughter only sees a team of superheroes."

A perfect example to young girls everywhere of the power of human potential. And opportunity to capitalize on that potential regardless of gender.

It was different when I started in the outsourcing business. It was a man's world. Today we are proud that women make powerful contributions to our company across all roles. Today marks out second Blogiversary, the start of my third year blogging and the first of the best eight weeks of summer. Can you believe how time flies?

I never pictured myself blogging or even being able to keep such a demanding commitment. But here I am and so glad I dipped in. Opines one of the TED Keynoters that we shared with you, "employees, through social media, are changing how companies market to, and engage with, customers and prospects. Unauthentic sales pitches doesn’t work anymore. Instead, we are witnessing the rise of the social employee who creates a win/win proposition by leveraging their personal brands to build trust and increase the digital “surface area” of the brands for which they work."

Blogging has become one of the most fulfilling, worthwhile and personally gratifying endeavours of my career. You make it so.

And as you watch the beautiful short video above, remember how important it is to enjoy each and every moment in life and to look at every day as an opportunity to open yourself up to something new.

Please remember that Freedom is the cornerstone of this wonderful world.......

As I finish this I am at the site mentioned above where we displaced a decades-old incumbent. The site looks amazing. I am personally with our at contact waking the floors and the staff looks impeccable. Bravo. Bravo. So gosh darn proud of everyone. Sales team. Expansion teams. Awesome site tour and great client. The place is immaculate. Wow. FSO career apparel and technology In full swing. Made me day. 

This all happened and is happening in part due to great service over the past few years where our Records team wowed the socks off of the client in a different location helping to give that vote of confidence to enable us to win and take on all outsourced services.
