TED Tuesday: Simon Sinek's ‘Start With Why.’

"Why do some companies achieve things that completely exceed our expectations, defying all our assumptions for what's possible?'

Good Morning Folks,

I’m a big fan on Simon Sinek and it seems like you agree. When we presented his talk "How Great Leaders Inspire Action" on an earlier TED Tuesday, your reaction was overwhelming.  "How Great Leaders Inspire Action" is an amazing, inspiring and thought provoking talk from TEDxPugetSound.

Today's TEDTalk is a shorter variation on that theme.

You may have also seen my presentations based on Simon's ‘golden circle of human emotion,’ which explains the greatest motivation behind why people buy.

Simply put, he proves that people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.

Why do some companies achieve things that completely exceed our expectations, defying all our assumptions for what's possible?  Apple starts with "why" when defining their company, they are able to attract customers who share their fundamental beliefs. As Sinek puts it, "People don't buy what you do. They buy why you do it." Starting with "why" makes Apple, for example, more than just a computer company selling features, and that's why their products have flourished while their competitors' products with similar technology and capabilities have often flopped.

As a consultant and author, his books and presentations have provided inspiration to major organizations, corporations, non-profits, and businesses like ours to reshape our thinking, and by doing so, make us more responsive to the needs of our teams and our customers, and grow ourselves by the very process.

So now, here’s a treat for you: Sinek’s TED talk, ‘Start With Why.’

It occurred to me, that while many of you may be familiar with his TED Talks, you my be less familiar with his books: “Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action”, and “Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don’t.” Find them at Amazon.com.

I think the concept of starting with why hits the nail on the head regarding the trust economy. Most businesses have very comparable competitors, and it's trust and loyalty that will differentiate them in the markets through customer retention, word-of-mouth and the ZMOT. Starting with why allows businesses to go beyond what they're selling and connect on an emotional level that's much more moving that a few key features. Don't tell the world how you're going to change it, show the world.

At FSO, our strategy team also starts with the why and never loses its childlike curiosity to keep asking questions all with the goal on enabling our customers to find better ways, more options, more efficient resources and talent to enable what was not possible before.

Perhaps that's why we are the fastest growing company in outsourcing and have been so distinguished with inclusion on the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in America for the past three consecutive years. Only a tiny fraction of the nation's companies have demonstrated such remarkably consistent high growth, particularly in the difficult economic environment of the past few years. This achievement truly puts you in rarefied company.

Have a GREAT Day,

Celebrating a Historic Soccer Win and Fearless Women Chasing Their Goals

"To the women of the World Cup, the Crain's honorees, and women everywhere who are making vital, significant contributions to their businesses, families and the health and well-being of the world at large, I salute you."

Good Morning Folks,

Welcome back from what I trust was a great 4th of July and holiday weekend for all. I hope everyone had an awesome long weekend and was able celebrate and enjoy some FUN with family and friends.

For all the blood, sweat and tears, Americans join me this morning celebrating our country's historic soccer win which roused the nation Sunday, sparking celebrations far and wide, online and off. Today we are World Cup champions, and forever we are World Cup champions!

Whereas women playing soccer was novelty the first time around, this time it validated women as sportsmen. Individuals who trained for years to kick off in top condition and come together as each instrument does in an orchestra in perfect harmony. The power of many succeeding as one.

As one fan tweeted, "For all the heartbreak #USWNT has experienced since last World Cup victory, my 3yo daughter only sees a team of superheroes."

A perfect example to young girls everywhere of the power of human potential. And opportunity to capitalize on that potential regardless of gender.

It was different when I started in the outsourcing business. It was a man's world. Today we are proud that women make powerful contributions to our company across all roles. From the ELT leaders we have in Finance, People Solutions, and Strategy. To the top-level management in Training, Hospitality, Sales and leading our sites. To our clients themselves whom we report to, many of them strong women leading large profit centers.

And we are so delighted that Crain's honored some of our clients and many more on their just-released list of New York's 50 Most Powerful Women, celebrating whole new crop of leaders reshaping the Big Apple. They wrote:
"From banking to the arts, technology to health care, New York's female leaders cover every aspect of business, and this year, they have risen to even greater heights—leaving that glass ceiling in the dust. For the first time ever this year, women were appointed to lead two of the Big 4 accounting firms.
In a hypercompetitive city jam-packed with talent, it was difficult for Crain’s editorial team to choose—and rank—the 50 women on this list. We weighed many factors, from their job titles and chains of command, to their organizations’ revenues and scope, to their civic engagement. In the following profiles we salute them all—and hope that anyone striving to join them someday at the top will be inspired by their successes.
What great examples you are setting for young women everywhere. We congratulate all of the winners.

Of course no one woman in any organization can do it alone. Like what was required to take the World Cup, it's about grit, determination, training, practice, perfection, teamwork, coaching, motivation and communication. The same qualities each of our teams at FSO aspire to in order to perform at peak for you.

At FSO, like in Professional Sports, everyone is here to support each other to achieve greatness. We ensure that our teams have the necessary skills to perform their jobs successfully and if there are gaps, we provide the training to fill those gaps. Once we've confirmed they have the skills to perform their job, we hold folks accountable, providing them with all the motivation in the world to ensure they are super successful.

There is a saying, "The woman I was yesterday. introduced me to the woman I am today; which makes me very excited about meeting the woman I will be tomorrow."

To the women of the World Cup, the Crain's honorees, and women everywhere who are making vital, significant contributions to their businesses, families and the health and well-being of the world at large, I salute you.

Love Life! I am looking forward to seeing you soon.

Seth Godin: (re)Radical aka (re) Imagine

"Does this place exist to maintain and perpetuate the status quo, or am I here to do the work that the radical founder had in mind when we started?"

Good Morning Folks,

I hope everyone had an amazing weekend - especially after an awesome week at FSO!

We had the second CHO Club last week - which was just amazing!!  (and we have the pictures to prove it)!

I along with the entire ELT LOVE nothing more than celebrating YOU, our valued employees!

Our company is growing and nothing is going to stop us. We are too strong. Focused. Passionate and committed to making FSO the number one on site outsourcing company on the planet.

The quest for growth is always powered by a thirst for change. Seth Godin, one of  marketing's brightest minds put it this way in a blog post this weekend:
(re)Radical  <aka (re) Imagine>
At the congregation down the street, they're doing things the way they've done them for the last few hundred years. Every week, people come, attracted by familiarity, by the family and friends around them, part of a tribe.
And just past that building is another one, a different tribe, where the tradition is more than a thousand years old.
This is not so different from that big company that used to be an internet startup, but all the original team members have long left the building. Work tomorrow has a lot in common with work yesterday, and the safety of it all is comforting.
Che, Jefferson, Edison, Ford... most of these radicals would not recognize the institutions that have been built over time.
The question each of us has to answer about the institution we care about is: Does this place exist to maintain and perpetuate the status quo, or am I here to do the work that the radical founder had in mind when we started?
First principles. The quest for growth, or for change, or for justice. The ability, perhaps the desire, to seek out things that feel risky.
All of us are part of organizations that were started by outliers, by radicals, by people who cared more about making a difference than fitting in.
Bravo to all those who won the invite to attend and to everyone else - the next one is 2 June 2015 - I want to see YOU there! Demonstrate the FSO skip, fire, twinkle...WOW! your client...be an awesome teammate....and you can win an invite!!

This is yet another step in making FSO the company we want to be. To be the happiest place to work and one of Americas greatest companies to work for.

Rock the week,

Ted Tuesday: Bel Pesce— 5 ways to kill your dreams

"If you have dreams, it's your responsibility to make them happen."

Good Morning Folks,

All of us want to invent that game-changing product, launch that successful company, write that best-selling book. And yet so few of us actually do it. Brazilian entrepreneur Bel Pesce breaks down five easy-to-believe myths that ensure your dream projects will never come to fruition

What do you suppose they are? Those things that’ll kill your dreams?

You can’t believe they can be yours?  Your dreams that is.

What about I don’t believe I can be that person.

Or there’s always I‘m not good enough to have my dreams come true?

These come under the category of doubt and yep that’ll do it. Doubt is a great way to repel anything that might otherwise be drawn to us.  All those beautiful desires, burned out by the flame of doubt.

So sad.

When we join the Doubting Thomas crew you can be sure we’re uncertain and distrusting.  Uncertain of what?  Distrusting of what?  Us?  The creative laws of the universe that are ours to operate to our heart’s content?  What the heck’s with that?  What are we focused on here…certainly not the fulfillment of our desires.  Once again we’re back on that old arguing for our limitations bandwagon.

But really, one of the biggest killer of our dreams is inertia.  Join it with fear and you have an awesome twosome, in the worst sense of the phrase.  The terrible twos.

Our challenge is that there are times when the status quo is too damned comfortable.  We don’t want to rock the boat, no, not even to experience our greatest dream, because what if….

It doesn’t work out…

I can’t do what I need to do to have what I want…

I might actually succeed and then what?

The best way to kill your dreams? Listen to the advice of others, rather than following your own best instincts.

Often, our goals in life can only be reached with the cooperation of others. Lacking that cooperation, goals may not be met because they cannot be achieved alone.

Tells Bel, "I myself have a story in Brazil that people think is an overnight success. I come from a humble family, and two weeks before the deadline to apply to MIT, I started the application process. And, voila! I got in. People may think it's an overnight success, but that only worked because for the 17 years prior to that, I took life and education seriously. Your overnight success story is always a result of everything you've done in your life through that moment."

Here's Bel....

Wise words Bel. I'm a big fan of yours :) What a great talk Bel Pesce, very motivating and inspiring.

It really gives people courages as well as telling things are not easy in real life. Love all the points especially No 1 about overnight success and no 5 about the journey. We are all waiting for that magic moment but actually success comes when we actually enjoy the journey. This is powerful. I hope more and more young people can come to understand life in their own positive way.Taking hard work as one of very fabulous success for us to persuit in our life

So, believe in overnight success, believe someone else has the answers for you, believe that when growth is guaranteed, you should settle down, believe the fault is someone else's, and believe that only the goals themselves matter. Believe me, if you do that, you will destroy your dreams.

Have a GREAT Day,

Mitchell D. Weiner

Love Springs Eternal at FSO (and did we remind you WE'RE HIRING?)

"If you have an idea, share your idea! Look to grow with the company! Do not be afraid to take the leaps necessary to help this organization grow—it will in turn help you grow as well."

Good Morning Folks,

I hope you had a great great holiday weekend. What a beautiful spring weekend :)

Lots of great things are happening as we welcome the longer and warmer days of spring into FSO.

This all happened because of you – because each one of you care deeply about FSO and our customers.  Your professionalism, dedication and commitment are an inspiration to me and I have shared this feedback with many of you, both at HQ and in the field.

The most important thing about our business is our people (YOU). Do they know about all of the opportunities that are available for them to feel how valued they are to me and the entire ELT? Are you taking the time to talk and listen to your team? Are you training your team? Are you making it PERSONAL? Are you sharing this feedback with your director, the PSTeam, the ELT?

We are here for you...you have tons of support. Strong communications team - this is the key to our success!  FSO is a company that is all about coming up with the best possible solution to best support our clients. If you have an idea, share your idea! Look to grow with the company! Do not be afraid to take the leaps necessary to help this organization grow—it will in turn help you grow as well.

Ted Tuesday: Stanley McChrystal: Listen, learn ... then lead

“One of America’s greatest warriors.” — Secretary of Defense Robert Gates

Good Morning Folks,

If you want to be a better leader, today's Ted talk is going to be quite remarkable for you. This is a good speech on leadership from one of the finest Generals of our time, General Stanley McChrystal.

General Stanley McChrystal is the former commander of U.S. and International forces in Afghanistan. A four-star general, he is credited for creating a revolution in warfare that fuses intelligence and operations.

Four-star general Stanley McChrystal shares what he learned about leadership over his decades in the military. How can you build a sense of shared purpose among people of many ages and skill sets? By listening and learning — and addressing the possibility of failure.

Says McChrystal, "I was raised with traditional stories of leadership: Robert E. Lee, John Buford at Gettysburg. And I also was raised with personal examples of leadership. This was my father in Vietnam. And I was raised to believe that soldiers were strong and wise and brave and faithful; they didn't lie, cheat, steal or abandon their comrades. And I still believe real leaders are like that. But in my first 25 years of career, I had a bunch of different experiences."

"And I learned personal relationships were more important than ever. We were in a difficult operation in Afghanistan in 2007, and an old friend of mine, that I had spent many years at various points of my career with -- godfather to one of their kids -- he sent me a note, just in an envelope, that had a quote from Sherman to Grant that said, "I knew if I ever got in a tight spot, that you would come, if alive." And having that kind of relationship, for me, turned out to be critical at many points in my career."

"I stood in front of a screen one night in Iraq with one of my senior officers and we watched a firefight from one of our forces. And I remembered his son was in our force. And I said, "John, where's your son? And how is he?" And he said, "Sir, he's fine. Thanks for asking." I said, "Where is he now?" And he pointed at the screen, he said, "He's in that firefight." Think about watching your brother, father, daughter, son, wife in a firefight in real time and you can't do anything about it. Think about knowing that over time. And it's a new cumulative pressure on leaders."

Have a look:

Concludes McCrystal: "That was my journey. I hope it’s not over. I came to believe that a leader isn’t good because they’re right; they’re good because they’re willing to learn and to trust.

This isn’t easy stuff. It’s not like that electronic abs machine where, 15 minutes a month, you get washboard abs.

And it isn’t always fair. You can get knocked down, and it hurts and it leaves scars.

But if you’re a leader, the people you’ve counted on will help you up. And if you’re a leader, the people who count on you need you on your feet."

Thank you General. Any day our Future Leaders need more inspiration I encourage them to watch this and then watch it again.

Good leaders are able to get others to buy into a common cause and to give others a sense of purpose, which is what this talk was about. Leadership is needed to communicate. He says that they must build trust and confidence in order to communicate with the people. I think that a true leader is trying to fit the characteristics. Thanks for listening.

Have a GREAT Day,

The Power of Smile: Never Leave Home Without One

"Today's customers want and expect to be "positively, emotionally and memorably impacted at every relationship touchpoint."

Good Morning Folks,

A smile is a universal gesture of hospitality. A warm, genuine, and sincere smile can never be misunderstood. A smile is of the most emotional signals of all. It has an almost irresistible power to make other people smile in return. Smiling primes positive feelings.

So from the first infectious smile and happy face that greets you by name in the morning, we offer an enormous opportunity to (re) imagine and reinvigorate your workplace with People + Solutions + Technology from FSO.

Emotional connections are about capturing the hearts and minds - It’s how FSO makes our clients feel about us. Emotional connections can determine the strength and length of a customer relationship. They drive passion, loyalty and advocacy.

Clients become engaged in a "personal" way. And, they make a compelling case that today's customers want and expect to be "positively, emotionally and memorably impacted at every level of their commercial existence."

The more connected customers are to your brand and employees, the more likely they are to seek out your brand, and recommend it to others.

Over the years I’ve come across two groups of people. Those that are thankful and appreciative of others and those that aren’t. Having an attitude of gratitude is one of the keys to business as well as life.

I was talking to a person the other day and they were moaning and groaning about how they hated their job. To cut a long story short, I politely listened and then said, “Is this the same job that puts food on your table?” They went quiet and then said, “I suppose so.” I then suggested that they be grateful for their job as there are many people that don’t have one.

I saw the same person the next week and they had a smile on their face. I asked them what had changed and they said, “Their attitude.” After talking to each other the previous week they decided to be positive about their job and bring a good attitude to work. Amazingly, the job magically improved and they had a great time each day. They learned to be thankful for what they have.

Not everyone is suited for every job but it’s incredible how a task can become more enjoyable if you stop grumbling and starting thanking those around you for the opportunity.

We, the employees of FSO, are committed to ensuring that every client interaction we have is personal, friendly and delivered with a smile, where the experience of FSO is felt by all.

Our job in hospitality is to make our clients feel as if they are at home and create memories and experiences that want to make clients “return.” It is also our job to make sure that we supply our clients with that “WOW” factor that makes them feel special. As important as it is to take care of our clients, it is equally important to take care of all of our team members. The more enthusiastic and happy our employees are at work the more productive they will be. Without the support of each team member that “WOW” factor will never be given to our clients.”\

And that all starts with a smile. A smile is the light in your window that tells others that there is a caring, sharing person inside. Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.

Smile in the mirror. Do that every morning and you'll start to see a big difference in your life.

Then try it on someone today at work and experience its power to make everything that happens, happen better.

Have a GREAT Monday and a wonderful week!

Love Life!
