TED Tuesday: Johann Hari— Everything You Think You Know About Addiction Is Wrong

"The opposite of addiction is not sobriety. The opposite of addiction is connection."

Good Morning Folks,

Whether it's a drug, a hobby, fitness or Facebook, chances are you or someone you know is addicted to something. Perhaps today's TED conveys information you can use if you or someone you know struggles with any of these problems.

What really causes addiction — to everything from cocaine to smart-phones? And how can we overcome it? Johann Hari has seen our current methods fail firsthand, as he has watched loved ones struggle to manage their addictions. He started to wonder why we treat addicts the way we do — and if there might be a better way. As he shares in this deeply personal TEDtalk, his questions took him around the world, and unearthed some surprising and hopeful ways of thinking about an age-old problem.

Is everything we know about addiction wrong? For example, one fact Hari touches upon is the long held belief that certain drugs, like heroin, for example, have chemical hooks in them that make you addicted – meaning if you take them for a period of time your body would become chemically dependant on those hooks. They create a physical dependency which result in addiction.

Is it about our environment? Our bonds, our connections, and our access to fulfilling, enjoyable activities? Is it about how we think about and perceive the world around us? Is it because we are not being nourished (mentally and spiritually)?

In the TEDTalk he says, “I believe the core part of addiction is, and what I think the evidence suggests, is about not being able to bear to be present in your life. And I think the core of that message -- you're not alone, we love you -- has to be at every level of how we respond to addicts, socially, politically and individually. For 100 years now, we've been singing war songs about addicts. I think all along we should have been singing love songs to them, because the opposite of addiction is not sobriety. The opposite of addiction is connection.” 

From there, the talk gets even more interesting (I’ll let you listen to the rest), and will definitely give you something to think about when it comes to addiction.

Inspire ME Friday: Why You Love Your Job (even if you don't know it)

What can we be thankful for when it comes to the workplace this summer?

• We can be thankful for the Internet and the knowledge of the universe it can provide when it comes to work research. 

• We can be thankful for all the technologies like conference calls, Blue Jeans and Skype that allow us to stay off airplanes for business travel. And be thankful for good earphones that block out the crazy guy in the cube next door while we can listen to our favorite music.

• We can be thankful that business casual is now more the norm than the exception.

• If we have a good boss who supports us and mentors us, we should be very thankful. Having a good boss is always the number one factor in job satisfaction.

• If we enjoy our colleagues at work and learn from them and can't wait to be around them, we should be really thankful. 

• If we derive a real sense of worth and purpose from our work, and we get paid for it too, that's as good as it gets. Be thankful.

• If we have a job with health care benefits, where free coffee with real cream is provided and the possibility of a promotion exists, be thankful.

• And most of all, be thankful if your organization has an IT person who can fix whatever damage we do on a daily basis.

To be a part of a team and organization where you can learn and grow from your co workers, team members, direct reports and leadership is surely something to be thankful for.

And I'm thankful for those who regardless of tenure, experience or position, have the ability to recognize and encourage opportunities to learn from others at all levels along with customers and the competition. 

Not every has that ability or the self confidence to accept and celebrate learning from others.

Remember.... "Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one. 

This year, we can all be thankful for the love or our family and friends, our health and if we have meaningful work too, what a bonus. So put the smartphones down, this weekend, even if for a minute, and enjoy it.

Today we are having an Open House at our headquarters looking to add hundreds of exceptionally talented folks to support our national expansion.

The main thing we look for is "skip, fire and twinkle." People who exude so much passion and self-confidence, they can't help but to get others excited too. We look for people who take the initiative to always look for new and different and more efficient ways of doing things. People whose smile will always brighten our client's day.

How can we demonstrate such an attitude, a spirit?

Well you've probably seen an amazing talent on the Internet who has probably dazzled and amazed you with his sparkling entertainment.

Zach King is a filmmaker, born and raised in Portland. He started his film journey at age seven when his parents gave him a camera at a wedding. After being rejected from film school, he started the YouTube channel "FinalCutKing," where he posted video editing tutorials. Zach has garnered more than 400,000 subscribers to his channel. In September 2013, he launched a Vine account based around his "magic" editing and has grown an audience of nearly 1 million fans.

What is most fascinating about his story is can you believe he was rejected from Film School but snuck in any way to observe classes while his Chinese dad insisted he be a piano major as is the native custom, he claims? He interned as a camera man on a Rhino shoot in thee wild which gave him great perspective as an editor. Even though some of his own movies have been viewed over twenty million times (a lot more than some $300 million Hollywood films) he still wants to be a Hollywood movie director and I'm sure we're going to be seeing him get an Oscar some day soon.

Like Zach, some people who come to our Open Houses at FSO have faced insurmountable odds in life, tons of rejection and glass ceilings in their previous careers. But if they bring the skip, fire and twinkle and show ambition and work really hard, we are willing to invest in training and development and they can advance rapidly and their dreams can be realized. Just ask any of the managers you meet during our interview process. It wasn't long ago that they walked in our door, as you will today.

TED Tuesday: Ruth Chang— A Better Way to Make Hard Choices

Here's a TED Talk that could literally change your life. Which career should I pursue? Should I break up — or get married?! Where should I live? Big decisions like these can be agonizingly difficult. But that's because we think about them the wrong way, says philosopher Ruth Chang. She offers a powerful new framework for shaping who we truly are.

Chances are, the hard choice you thought of was something big, something momentous, something that matters to you. Hard choices seem to be occasions for agonizing, hand-wringing, the gnashing of teeth. But I think we've misunderstood hard choices and the role they play in our lives. Understanding hard choices uncovers a hidden power each of us possesses.

When you face your next hard choice, don't beat your head against the wall trying to find the "right" answer. "There is no best alternative." Chang insists. Instead, see the choice as a fork in the road, an opportunity to choose who you really want to be. The alternative is to be a drifter, one of those people who don't declare themselves "for" anything, who allow "the world to write the story of their lives," as Chang puts it, who blindly follow affirmation or avoid the terror of the unknown.
